Alternative folk artist, Krista Polvere, left Australia for New York in 2007 to immerse herself in the city and be inspired by the streets that have spawned some of her favourite songwriters. Once there, she caught the attention of Ryan Adams, who collaborated on songs on Polvere’s beautiful debut album, Here Be Dragons.

Etta James / At Last
When I play this song I start to swing around the house — singing and dancing like a crazy person. Her voice is sublime and the string arrangement is extraordinary.

Tom Waits / Grapefruit Moon
I love this song for its nostalgic feeling. Tom Waits sings so gently in a song that is so clean and simple but pure genius.

Bob Dylan / Idiot Wind
Dylan sings this song on his infamous album, Blood on the Tracks. He really incriminates his wife Sarah in this song as this was released around the time of their separation. I appreciate the honesty in it.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club / Devil’s Waitin’
These boys have such a blues-roots feel to them on their album, Howl. But this song particularly resonates with me. The style of singing is very loose and the music reminiscent of gospel.

INXS / Need You Tonight
Sometimes we just simply need to not be emotionally involved but act on our primal instinct. This is sex in the making! [Dirtbombs cover version below]

Led Zeppelin / Ramble On
This song is the most primal music made. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are unstoppable. This for me is a drinking song; one where I end up singing stupidly and the bogan in me awakes. I love it!

Natalie Merchant / San Andreas Fault
This is a reflective piece. The song begins and I start to drift off, thinking about a time and place with someone I love. It’s a happy song, in my view.

Neko Case / Runnin’ Out Of Fools
I love the lyric and her voice. I can almost hear the ghosts of her lover in this song. She seems fed up with his charms and they ain’t going to work anymore!
