Miniature Tigers first burst into our minds — and eardums — when Rolling Stone magazine named them in their December 2006 issue as being ‘one of the 25 best bands on Myspace‘. Since then the Phoenix, Arizona indie rock band have released two EPs, and a critically acclaimed long player, Tell it to the Volcano, which came out in August of this year.
The Kinks / Sunny Afternoon
This song gives me great mental imagery when I listen to it. I feel like I’m going through it with him. Just when you think you know The Kinks, you discover all these songs you’ve never heard.
The Beatles / Misery
It’s impossible to pick just one Beatles song, so I’ll just go with the first one that comes to mind. I love this song and went through a huge phase of having this on repeat for a while. I went through a big early Beatles phase after I had gone through my White Album phase. Oh, Beatles phases!
David Bowie / Soul Love
This song makes me feel like I’m on the beach at the end of the movie Contact. I really admire the production on it. And how about those lyrics? ‘Touch the flaming dove’. Woah!
Weezer / Falling For You
I picked this track from my favourite album of all time, Pinkerton. Weezer was a major influence on me when I started writing songs. This song has about 50 chords in it and always confuses me when I try to play it on guitar. How did he write that fantastic guitar solo?
Harry Nilsson / So Long, Dad
This is actually a Randy Newman cover from an album called Nilsson Sings Newman. Right now this is my favourite song from the album due to Nilsson’s beautiful voice and Randy Newman’s brilliant lyrics. I highly recommend tracking down this treasure.
The Shins / Gone For Good
I love his voice in this song. It also has great lyrics that keep me wanting to know the meaning.
The Zombies / This Will Be Our Year
Coin Blunstone has won World’s Smoothest Voice competition every year from 1961 till present. This song is very uplifting and makes me feel positive about life.
Ray Noble and His Orchestra / Midnight, The Stars and You
You may know this song from the end of The Shining. If you can disassociate the creepiness, it’s a truly beautiful song. I can listen to it forever. I’ve always been the caretaker.
