South African post-grunge band, Seether, have sold more than five million albums worldwide, having changed their name in 2002 from Saron Gas. Their latest album, Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces, is a classic — full of menacing, heavy guitars and deeply melodic vocal lines.
Counting Crows / Colorblind
This is one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard. I’ve always said a good song should make you feel something, whether it’s sadness, anger, or joy, and this is a prime example of a song that takes you to a certain place. From the very simple, ‘stripped down’ music, to the vulnerable vocal performance, it’s great!
Deftones / Engine No. 9
This song is all about the guitar tone and the riff for me. Deftones has always been a band that has stood alone and never sounded like anyone else. When I think of the Deftones, I think Engine No. 9. It’s angry and raw. I love it.
Faith No More / Midlife Crisis
Faith No More is a very underrated band. I think this is partly because they were a bit ahead of their time. Midlife Crisis is a great example of their rhythmic style and catchy vocal hooks.
Johnny Clegg / The Great Heart
Most people probably won’t know who Johnny Clegg is, but he is one of South Africa’s most successful and talented musicians. Being from South Africa, I have a soft spot for his music (growing up with it and all). It always makes me homesick to hear it but The Great Heart is a brilliantly written song. It’s loaded with hooks and great melody and then some African tribal rhythms to set it apart. Definitely worth checking out.
Pantera / Mouth for War
This was the first Pantera song I ever heard as a kid. I was completely blown away and it started a love affair I’ve had with the band to this present day. Pantera is my all-time favorite heavy band. Genius!
A Perfect Circle / 3 Libras
This is a beautiful song. Instrumentally, it’s interesting, with orchestral instruments integrated into the song. The vocals are unique as only Maynard can dream up.
The Pixies / Where Is My Mind?
This song is great in its simplicity. It sounds like it was recorded live and has a great feel. It’s completely different to the heavily Protooled bands of today and I love them for it. It’s a well-written song with a great hook.
Portishead / Roads
I like to listen to music that is really mellow. Portishead is the perfect band to relax to. This song is sad yet sweet. Her voice makes you feel like she’s in the room with you. After a crazy show, when you’re lying in your bunk, this is the go-to song.
