That Subliminal Kid, DJ Spooky — aka Paul D. Miller — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He has also just published a new book, Sound Unbound, which is all about sound art and digital media and features essays from Brian Eno and Moby.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry / Panic in Babylon
If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. Lee Scratch even had to make it clear in 1965 by adding ‘Scratch’ to his middle name. Take that, Grandmaster Flash!

Augustus Pablo / Java
This is one of my all-time favorite tracks. The melodica makes you think of a hot summer night someplace on the peak of Mount Everest.

Wolfmother / Another Dimension
This is one of my favorite current rock bands. They really bring back a combo of Rage Against the Machine and the lyrical catchiness of early Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

Gloria Jones / Tainted Love
Soft Cell covered this original soul music version, and electro has never been the same since. To me, the original is sooooo much better than the cover version.

My Bloody Valentine / Glider
Kevin Shields played guitar on an old EP of mine years ago. I grew up with two bands: Bad Brains and My Bloody Valentine. Love them both!

Jin / ABC
Jin’s ABC stands for ‘American Born Chinese’. He’s one of my favorite inheritors of Grandmaster Flash’s real Journey on the Wheels of Steel. The journey is in the language flow. He can switch between Cantonese and English with amazing speed.

Gajae Bal / Sound Ship
The sound of Seoul! Korean electronic music never sounded so good. This is a really beautiful track from one of my favorite Korean producers.

Amir Elsaffar / Shatt Al-Arab (Maqam Hadidi)
Amir is an Iraqi-American jazz composer who is making some of the best jazz this side of Baghdad. Check it!
