Like a cross between My Bloody Valentine and The Verlaines, Nashville band Paper Route write catchy, bouncy pop songs which don’t so much slide gracefully into your subconsciousness but, rather, lock themselves into it and throw away the key. Nice!
Elbow / Mirrorball
This song is a highlight off Elbows new album. It has a perfect groove the whole way through, and the melody is really pretty. I can’t help but nod my head along. I like that.
John Lennon / Jealous Guy
This song off of Imagine is quite sad but is really beautiful. Lennon simply sings ‘I’m just a jealous guy’ in the chorus, and I think any guy can relate to that. I also think it may be the only song with whistling that doesn’t sound gimmicky. It’s genius. The strings are also amazing here.
Aesop Rock / None Shall Pass
Aesop Rock is on another level. This track has a sort of hypnotic beat and hook and offers Aesop’s unmistakable style of rapping at its best. There’s also a dreamlike quality to this song that I love. It’s my driving song.
Burial / In McDonalds
This two minute long song can you make feel like you’re floating past an undiscovered planet, and when it’s done you want to replay it to take you back there.
Canon Blue / Rum Diary
Canon Blue, a friend and fellow Nashville artist, is one of my favorites lately. Rum Diary is a dreamy and pulsating electronic song about the passing of a good friend. The lyrics are as haunting as the music.
The Sleepy Jackson / You Needed More
I don’t know too much about The Sleepy Jackson, but I know that they’re worth your time. You Needed More is a little reminiscent of Tom Petty, but more complicated. Roll down your windows for this one.
Tom Waits / Hoist That Rag
I’m not sure how you write a song like this, but I imagine it has to be a good time. The aggressive percussion along with Waits at his angriest makes for a listen that only he can pull off. It makes you want to break something, which is good every once in a while.
Blur / Universal
This anthem is the ultimate feel-good song for me. There’s a good chance I don’t know what this song is actually about, but the line ‘it really, really, really could happen’ always sounds right. The strings and horns are epic. It’s just a perfect song.
