Fifteen years in and Oxford four-piece, Supergrass, are still going strong, delivering their unique Brat-rock sound with quirky lyrics and a visual image that wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of The Goodies. Yes, they’re young and free, indeed. Their latest album, Diamond Hoo Ha, is a gem, full of radio-friendly songwriting, something vocalist Gaz Coombes (first four tracks) and drummer Danny Goffey clearly favour, judging by their Secret Playlist.
Midlake / Roscoe
I’ve been listening to this album loads in the last few weeks. I went on trip to Austria recently. We drove all the way through the mountains and I played this record constantly on the journey. It was kinda beautiful, and really suited the scenery.
Harry Nilsson / Me and My Arrow
This is a very cute little song. In my mind, I always get this image of him wandering through a field of poppies, with a small puppy.
Neil Young / Revolution Blues
I suppose this is a bit of a lost album. I think it was probably in between a couple of his big ones, and it seems to get forgotten about. I absolutely love this track. It’s really powerful and very emotive, especially lyrically. It’s also quite an angry song.
Lou Reed / I Can’t Stand It
This is from his debut solo album, which is a record I really like. It’s got a kind of closeness about the sound and a very un-produced quality to it, which is pretty cool. I listened to this album a bit in Berlin when we were making our new record and I dig it. Seriously.
Elvis Costello / I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea
It’s a great song. I actually played drums with Elvis Costello about ten years ago, which is a great memory for me.
Blondie / Rapture
This reminds me of wearing headphones and walking up Haight Street in San Francisco, meeting up with the riff raff and dimebag buddies. Good times!
David Bowie / Moonage Daydream
I had to put a Bowie one in there as he’s one of my all-time favourites. This song has absurdly good lyrics. He’s a perfect rock and roll pop star.
The Specials / Ghost Town
This is music I was listening to as I was growing up. I remember being at a roller disco when I was ten listening to this track. I wasn’t very good at the roller skating, but I liked the song.
