Formerly the guitarist with A.S Dragon, Swedish musician Peter von Poehl is now a singer-songwriter in his own right, with a beautifully crafted new album, May Day, to follow-up on his 2006 release, Going to Where the Tea-Trees Are.
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy / Hard Life
A friend of mine asked me if I knew how to play this song. To me, it sounds like he has tuned down the guitar one tone on the recording. Whatever the case, it’s a great song.
Jimmy Campbell / Snow Covered Street
A friend gave me a copy of one of his solo releases, Jimmy Campbell’s album, a couple of years ago. It has become one of my absolute favourites ever since. The lyrics are lovely. It is beautifully orchestrated and the whole thing is performed in the most touching way. Sadly, he passed away a few months ago.
Shuggie Otis / Aht Uh Mi Hed
His Inspiration Information has followed me around for years. It sounds absolutely modern to me, although it was recorded more than 30 years ago. There are few records on my shelf that can bring up my mood like this one.
The Beatles / While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Can you answer the question, ‘which one is your favourite Beatles album?’ I’m not sure I have a real favourite, but I love the disparity on the White Album. Records these days are far too coherent. If they awarded a Nobel Prize for sound-recordings, Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick would stand a good chance. Without him St Pepper would surely have sounded very different.
Jan Johansson / Jazz på Svenska (Jazz in Swedish)
When he died in a car crash at not even 40 years of age, he had an incredible range of music production behind him. On Jazz på Svenska, he interprets Swedish folk songs in the most fantastic way. If you are interested in recording techniques, check out the piano sound on this album.
Bertrand Burgalat / The Ssssound of Mmmmusic
I worked with this gentleman on a number of records and I learned more than one thing from him. His The Ssssound of Mmmmusic is still one of my favourites.
Bridget St John / Nice
I discovered this song not so long ago and it has quickly become a favourite. Whoever played lap-steel on it was a genius!
Anton Karas / The Harry Lime Theme
When Carol Reed was shooting The Third Man in Vienna, he heard Karas play the zither by chance and asked him to score the film. Less than a year later, half a million copies of the song had been sold – probably an unprecedented number at that time. It’s a nice Cinderella story.
