Melbourne-based rock band, Children Collide, are one of the hottest emerging artists of 2008. They’ve just been added to the Big Day Out bill, and currently have the featured album on Australian radio youth network, Triple J, with their recently released debut long-player, The Long Now.
Sonic Youth / Schizophrenia
The opening track off what is probably my favorite Sonic Youth album, Sister. I used to play this song in bands when I was fourteen. That was a while ago now and it still holds exactly the same weight with me as it did back then. A true classic.
The Birthday Party / Junkyard
The bass line in this song is one of my favorite ever. Tracy Pew was an amazing, sluggish, terrifying bass player. This song is truly intimidating. It captures the Birthday Party perfectly.
Harry Bellafonte / My Lord What A Mornin’
Probably the most moving song I have ever heard. A dying man confronts mortality and expresses his longing to sit at the right hand of his God. Amazing lyrics.
Paul Robeson / Stand Still Jordan
Paul Robeson was one of the most inspiring men to have ever lived. A black communist lawyer in pre-Cold War America. Not the most popular orientation at the time. This song is threatening and heart tearing.
Nina Simone / Sinnerman
An extended version of a traditional spiritual that gets me every time. Probably one of my favorite songs ever.
Otis Redding / A Change Is Gonna Come
Originally a Sam Cooke song, but I like the Otis version better because of the soul he puts into it. You can really feel its movement.
The Gun Club / Mother of Earth
I recently taught myself this song on guitar and have been irritating friends with it ever since.
Deaf Wish / Freeze The Sound
A Melbourne band, and one of the best acts I have ever seen live. This song builds up so perfectly into a wall of noise and guttural, pained, truthful screaming. A recipe for a good time if I’ve ever heard one.
