Singer-songwriter Yoav takes his disparate cultural heritage — predominantly Israeli and South African — and mixes it all up into a compelling musical montage of beats and acoustic instrumentation, all whipped into shape by his hauntingly beautiful voice.
Radiohead / Idioteque
I’ve been listening to this exhaustively as I am working a cover of it up at the moment. I love the breakbeat and the strange time signature, as well as all the sonic weirdness going on around Thom Yorke’s voice. The lyric seems to be a very prescient, yet not a preachy lament about the human race destroying itself.
MIA / Bird Flu
I love the way the rhythms ebb and flow and the tribal clashing drum samples in the chorus which sounds like Missy Elliot meets Gamelan music from Indonesia. I’m not quite sure what MIA is on about, but that doesn’t matter at all. Joyous.
Bjork / Declare Independence
I am psyched to be going to see Bjork tomorrow night. She is one of my very favourite live artists. This song should be a highlight. It’s mental, kind of like she is channeling Nine Inch Nails at their heaviest.
The White Stripes / The Hardest Button to Button
I’ve recently had the chance to really get into the White Stripes properly. I’ve always loved the sound and the minimalist noise of it, but what has been blowing me away, is Jack White’s lyrics. They are just mind bogglingly cool. This is deep, quirky, funky and dark.
Bob Dylan / Masters of War
Okay, not exactly on the cutting edge of new music, but I have been revisiting this for the first time since I was a kid, so I have a whole new perspective now. The lyrics of all these tunes are humbling for anyone trying to pull a song together. They are pure, soulful, poetic, and ever fresh. I also really love his vocal delivery more and more.
Joy Division / She’s Lost Control
My favourite Joy Division tune. It’s so ahead of its time. The beat is wicked and the song builds hypnotically around Ian Curtis’s ghostly vocals. This is crying out for a crazy dark electro mix, if it hasn’t already been done yet.
Matthew Herbert / Plat De Jour
I don’t know the names of any of the separate tracks on this record offhand, but apparently all the beats were made with kitchen utensils. This is amazing, lush and trippy, sampler driven music, that reminds me of Aphex Twin, but is even more beautiful. Post-gig, late night drives are transformed into gorgeous soundscapes by this.
Outkast / So Fresh So Clean
This is the tune I listen to when I am getting ready to go out. It makes me feel super smooth. I adore Outkast and will pick up everything they do. The arrangements are fresh, the beats are unique. Big Boi is a great MC and Andre 3000’s charisma shines clean across the sound waves and into my brain.
