Consisting of Super Furry Animals’ frontman, Gruff Rhys, and the ever-eclectic producer extraordinaire Boom Bip, Neon Neon recently released their electric debut album, Stainless Style (Lex Records), to deserved acclaim. Stainless Style is a turbo-charged slice of highly imaginative conceptual power-pop based around the incredible life and times of the world’s first playboy engineer, John DeLorean, the mastermind behind the iconic DMC-12 car used in 80s hit flick Back To The Future.
MGMT / Time to Pretend
There are songs that come along every now and then that express what everyone is thinking but can’t put into words. This is one of them. It’s a point of view from a wanna-be wreckless generation that just has too many unseen reins to actually be free.
No Age / Eraser
This band is a local Los Angeles favorite of mine. They seem to be blowing up rapidly, so catch them quick. It takes me back to the music I made in college with raw energy, simplicity and ambition.
Golden Gate Music Jubilee Quartet / Never Said a Mumblin’ Word
Old powerful gospel. I can’t get enough of quartets from this era. It’s so warm and potent. Check out how much this lead voice sounds like Antony.
After Dinner / Paradise of Replica
Such a classic record. This song has inspired a new direction for my album I am currently working on. Less is more!
Psychedelic Horseshit / New Wave Hippies
This is a very refreshing song in a very aggressive kind of way. It’s complaining about ‘ageing nineties ravers’ (’huggin all kind of trees’) who are turning to folk music. Mind you, you could easily put me into this demographic. It’s from a great album called Magic Flowers Droned. If you’re bored with predictable passive music, Psychedelic Horseshit will chop up your coffee table with an axe and put it on a bonfire!
Captain Beefheart / Observatory Crest
It’s been summer here up North, so I’ve dug out this groovy Californian slo-jam once more. It actually sounds better sped up.
The Osmonds / Crazy Horses
Shit band, obviously, but get the seven inch single of this song from a charity shop and play it on 33rpm (way slower than it’s supposed to be played) on a turntable and it sounds like a great stoner Norwegian death band or something.
Squarepusher / My Red Hot Car
Makes a change from Windowlicker.
Giorgio Moroder / Faster Than The Speed of Love
Great title, great tune. Imagine yourself cruising down the forrested Bavarian autobahn at 120 miles an hour, with a vocoder pipe in your mouth and the light breeze from the air con gently massaging the hairs of your moustache. It’s 1977 and you are on your way to Munich to record this song. Your name is Giorgo Moroder. In the future you will release some crap records, but right now you are a pioneer. You check your soul glow curls in the wing mirror and drive on into the future.
