The film clip for Australian Hip Hop artist, Phrase’s latest single — Skylight — has just been released and it’s a lot of fun. A tribute to the classic 1980s Japanese television show, Monkey ['ooh, Monkey!'], the video stars Phrase as Monkey, alongside Aussie rock legend, Kram [Spiderbait], as Shadow Wizard. It’s a tasty snippet from Phrase’s second album, Burn It Down, which is due out in early 2009. The album is the follow up to Phrase’s 2006 debut, Talk With Force.
Eric Clapton / Cocaine
I love this song. It’s got that classic psychedelic rock vibe to it and it is one of my favourites to listen to before I go out. It always puts me in the mood to party. That’s not to say drugs are good, kids. Don’t do drugs, but definitely listen to this song.
Daniel Merriweather / Impossible
This track is my number one at the moment. It is about the fact that his love is so strong he would do anything for this girl and that nothing is impossible for your love. It reminds me of how much I love my girlfriend. It’s produced by Mark Ronson, but there is no way you can hear it yet because it’s not out, so you are going to have to wait for it! But I think you can catch a snippet on his MySpace page.
Phrase (featuring Kram from Spiderbait) / Skylight
It’s about being high on life and the rush of working as a recording artist. I wrote this song on the plane on the way back to Melbourne, hence the title, Skylight.
Stevie Wonder / All Is Fair In Love
This song is a killer. It’s about a relationship not working out over time and how things have changed and I think it means that if you are not careful with love, you will get burned. Stevie’s vocals are nothing short of incredible. Ladies, if you have a broken heart and feel like a good cry, this is your song.
M.O.P / Ante Up
This has to be hip-hop’s all-time classic banger. I don’t think I will ever get sick of this song. Every time I hear it, I feel like I could take on the world. I spit on any hip-hop DJ who does not have this track in their Playlist.
Jay Z / Ain’t No Love
This is a must-have for me as the production is amazing. Jay Z’s flow is killer, as per usual, and the chorus is a gospel choir. The song is about the fact that there is no love in the city and people are always trying to hold you down when you aim for the top. It reminds me of my struggle in the music industry trying to get a break.
The Eagles / Hotel California
Well, you can’t go past this for a great song to belt out while you’re in the car! Great late 70’s rock music from one of the greatest bands in the world.
Jade MacRae / Get Me Home
This song is Jade’s best work. It is off her latest album, called Get Me Home. It’s about being lost in the middle of a frantic life and trying to get back to that safe place that we often drift to far away from when we stop paying attention. I like to come up with video ideas for this song.
