Sebastian Muravchix & Ali Renault, Heartbreak

heartbreak

Comprised of the fantastically flamboyant, charismatic Argentinian frontman Sebastian Muravchik and British keyboard mastermind Ali Renault, Heartbreak have developed a growing gang of devotees thanks to their debut single, We’re Back, and electrically charged live shows, which blur the boundaries between live music and religious experience. Christened ‘metalo’, the pair’s unique sound combines the high drama and melodic charm of early 80s Italian disco (the European counterpart to New York’s movement) with the dark, brooding energy of metal bands like Black Sabbath, as reflected on their debut album, Lies [out now on Lex through Inertia].

Florio Time DJ / Time Out
We first heard this on one of DJ Intergalactic Gary’s mixes a while ago. This is, in our opinion, a very special Italo disco track. It has a genius fretless-bass lick on it that makes you cry and a Euro-sounding rap that goes something like: ‘come on boys, come on girls, lets all dance to the music of your mouth’. At least, that’s what it sounds like.

Analogous Doom / Living In A Zome
We bought this a couple of weeks ago and can’t stop listening to it. It’s nice to hear her first release on vinyl after several digital releases, too. This is beautiful Drexciyan inspired electro by Vanna Carr.

Mr. Pauli / Biersmijt EP
Our good friends at Moustache Records have been releasing some amazing music lately and this is our current favorite on the label. Ingmar Pauli, aka Mr Pauli, will take you on a fantastic Italo funk journey – a trip we advise everyone to take.

Tommy Walker 3 / Jose
We’ve actually had this track lying around on some old CD-Rom for around eight years, but it recently got released on Cyber Dance records, so we’re listening to it again. We love the majestic melodies that Tommy Walker seems to write so effortlessly. The bastard!

The Presets / Talk Like That
We love these guys and this track is one of our favorites. It has an epic intro and a very catchy chorus that features a stabbing monosyllabic sample of Julian’s vocal. It sounds amazing when they play it live, too, which, of course, we got to experience when we toured with them in the US recently.

Drexciya / Deep Sea Dweller
We’re listening to this as we write this list. A friend of ours just returned from a random second hand record shop somewhere in the North West of England where he found loads of old brilliant techno records, this one being among them. This was Drexciya’s debut EP back in 1992, and it’s amazing.

Silverclub / Crash This Car
This has been on our player for some time now. New-wave style, very ‘Manchester’. Nice arpeggios in the melody throughout.

Deux / Game and Performance
One of Deux’s many gems from way back. Brilliant raw post-punk pop music. Minimal synths, top harmonic treatment, inspiring and evocative lyrics, and superbly restrained vocals. French synth-wave at its best.
