Named Best New Artist of 2008 by iTunes Canada, the Montreal foursome Winter Gloves endearingly dub themselves ‘glock-rock’ for their use of the oft-ignored glockenspiel. The band began as the solo project of Charles F, who created the early Winter Gloves recordings that make up Let Me Drive EP in his own home using a single microphone. The project soon evolved into a four-piece ensemble that also includes Pat Sayers, Vincent Chalifour, and Jean-Michel Pigeon.

Chad Vangaalen / TMNT Mask
I recently discovered the voice of Chad Vagaalen. It was such a shock that I wasn’t sure I would spread the news or keep it jealously for myself. The whole album is a hit, but this song stands out and brings together two of my childhood icons: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and cheap Casio keyboards.

Spoon / I Turn My Camera On
This one embodies the perfect song. It’s one of those you wish you wrote. It’s short, the groove is warm and perfectly repetitive, the vocal is sexy, uttering a melody so addictive that you’ll hit the floor like a tom.

You Say Party! We Say Die! / Opportunity
The arrangement is what makes me love this song so much: the repetitive guitar part in the middle followed by the “ou ous” and the frenetic double strokes on the Hi Hats. Totally contagious.

Passion Pit / I’ve Got Your Number
I see people dancing in the clouds wearing fluorescent outfits.

Broadcast / I Found The F
Gritty synths, hypnotic vocals, sloppy drums. You listen to this one on vinyl drinking scotch.

LCD Soundsystem / Someone Great
No need to introduce you to LCD Soundsystem, but I had to mention Someone Great since I believe it’s one of the best song of the last few years. This is our cover version of it.

Parlovr / Pen to the Paper
This young Montreal band sounds like it comes straight from the late 70s, playing a part of the Cold Wave movement in a happier version. It’s sloppy pop for Converse lovers.

Ramona Cordova / Giver’s Reply
It’s Sunday morning and there’s nothing to do except have a long breakfast. After the first sip of coffee, you can enjoy the minimalistic approach of Ramon. His frivolous voice will make you eager to hear what happens after the rattle sound.
