Land of Talk feature Elizabeth Powell, a former punk who got her start playing her own anti-rock anthems on the local scene of Guelph, Ontario, during her mid-teens. Upon her college years, with stints playing with the Aaron Riches Nuclear Family Band and the Valentines behind her, Powell set her sights on a solo career in the late ’90s. Gigs in and around Ontario and Quebec eventually led to the formation of Land of Talk in 2005 with Bucky Wheaton and Chris McCarron.
Bon Iver / Re:Stacks
This song changed my course, emotionally. I can’t tell you how, but it levelled me. Everyone I have played it for, or who has heard it, has had same to similar reactions. This is a song I will listen to well into my twilight years.
Grizzly Bear / On A Neck On A Spit
This song stood out on it’s own as something that reminded me of nothing, but made me so nostalgic. The recording is live off the floor, and spectacular sounding. The only thing I can liken the voices to is the Crosby Stills Nash and Young vibe.
Eulogies / One Man
These guys are from Los Angeles and they’re on Dangerbird records. The entire album is great. One Man is a perfect pop song, and I love the way the lead guy, Peter Walker, records all of his stuff. We toured with Eulogies for a couple of weeks and bought the CD the first night. We would pull up to the venue for load-in and be blasting their album. We had to insist to them that we weren’t taking the piss and then we became the best of friends. I would love to do a track with them some day.
Wintersleep / Weighty Ghost
I heard this song for the first time while we were recording the new record. It was late at night and the guys were tracking bass and drums and I was in the Kitchen with my parents, who came to visit. I think i was just checking Wintersleep’s tour dates to see if we would coincide at some point and Weighty Ghost started playing. An hour later I was living in the song. listening to it over and over: ‘I don’t need no surgery, take those knives away from me, just wanna die in my own body, a ghost just needs a home’. I have goosebumps just writing this down.
Fleetwood Mac / Dreams
I have flashes of being in the grocery store parking lot waiting for my Mum to finishing shopping and come back to the car. And of my roommate singing this as she was making breakfast. And my older cousin playing it in her jeep as she drove my brother and I in to town to go to the movies. I had no idea it was a Fleetwood Mac song, or even who Fleetwood Mac was until my early 20s. This song has just been everywhere in my life. Thank you Hits Radio!
Fugazi / Smallpox Champion
Fugazi are one of my all-time favorite bands. Seeing them play this live at the Warehouse in Toronto was incredible. As soon as they started it, the whole crowd just surged forwards. The absolute energy of the song was incredible.
Mary Margaret O’Hara / You Will Be Loved Again
I remember this song from when I was a child. I was seven years old I think. My Mum had the album and she played it all the time. It’s definitely not a purely nostalgic choice because she played a lot of records that I still hate! Even now. I rarely sing in the shower, but if I do, it’s almost always a bastardization of Mary Margaret’s melodies. They can even be a starting point when I’m writing my own songs.
