Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn’t until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. While his first album, Secret Diary (2002), was full of purposeful glitches and noise, his subsequent albums, Unstoppable (2004) moved closer towards danceable mixes of varying genres. With the groundbreaking Night Ripper (2006) and now the fourth Girl Talk album, Feed The Animals, he reaches nirvana with a creation that is centered on re-inventing instant party starting pop. As a re-mixer, Girl Talk is also in hot demand having tweeked tracks for Beck, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn and John, Of Montreal and 2007’s Thrill Jockey mega-mix.
Beyonce / Single Ladies
This is one of my favorite Beyonce tracks ever. It has so much energy, and the chorus gets dark in a great way. The clapping never stops. The video is a flawless execution of a performance style clip. It’s perfect.
Led Zeppelin / Over The Hills and Far Away
I’ve been jamming lots of Zeppelin recently. I like the arc of this song. When the riffage kicks in, it destroys.
Aphex Twin / Windowlicker
An electronic music classic. It’s a great combination of pop aesthetics and weirdness. And it’s a dynamic tune.
Bobby Caldwell / What You Won’t Do For Love
This is so smooth right here. Groove to it. The opening melody is such a signature. Put this on with your significant other and get serious.
Swing Out Sister / Breakout
If I ever heard this at a dance club, I would lose my mind. It’s a forgotten classic. This is the type of music that makes me feel good.
Aerosmith / Amazing
I’m down with Aerosmith. I know many people involved with underground music aren’t. Their loss. I like many different eras of it. The 90s stuff rules. This song is so dramatic. The guitar solo finale makes me want to walk on the moon.
T.I. featuring Rihanna / Live Your Life
This is one of my favorite recent singles. It’s a great sing-along banger. The melody is cool, T.I.’s flow is cool, and the chorus is addictive.
Isley Brothers / Shout
There’s no point in writing about this song. Just jam it. This is a peak of interactivity in music.
