Radio Wars, the new album from ex-pat Australian band, Howling Bells, is the follow-up to their self-titled debut released back in May 2006. It’s been a long time coming. ‘We’re an industrious lot. We never stop thinking and being inspired’, says singer Juanita Stein. ‘If it were up to us, we’d put out this record tomorrow and then start recording another straight away’.

The Flamingos / I Only Have Eyes for You
This has to be one of my favorite tracks of all time. It’s a perfect, perfect love song. The melodies and harmonies are to die for. And if you get the chance watch the clip on YouTube, it’s a beautiful performance by the band.

Jimi Hendrix / Drifting
This song has put me at peace too many times before. I grew up with Hendrix, so he’s morphed into my music guardian angel. Whenever I’m anxious, miserable, feeling any degree of hopelessness, his music puts a gentle hand on my shoulder.

FPU / Crockett’s Theme
I think he’s a Swedish electro guy who re-interpreted The Miami Vice Theme. It’s a gorgeous, dreamy electro track that I always find myself coming back to. It takes me exactly where I want to be.

The Byrds / Eight Miles High
I discovered this song in a car driving back from a show many years ago. I was aware of the song before that, but for whatever reason, I was ready to hear it at that point. It’s one of the most exciting, melodic pieces of psych 60s pop I know.

Nirvana / Scentless Apprentice
It kills me every time. I think of Kurt as a giant baby, just screaming the life outta himself. I hear it especially in this track, a desperately frustrated but brilliant creature just kicking and screaming until someone puts it at ease. Is there anything greater than pure, unadulterated rage over the most kick-ass melodic punk track you’ve ever heard? NO!

The Beach Boys / Warmth of The Sun
Like the Flamingos track, this is all 50s dreamboats and milkshakes. But there’s something much heavier lying beneath the surface with their music. This track is kinda sad and beautiful. But again, so melodic and tender.

Gene Vincent / Catman
It feels like the start of rock ‘n’ roll every time I hear it; like he’s single-handedly leading the punk rock revolution, screaming about watching out for the Catman. Whatever you take it to mean, it just feels right and raunchy and how rock should be.

Prokofiev / Romeo and Juliet
Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite pieces of music. I’m not at all clued up on the intricacies of classical music. However, this shoots, soars, sways and swirls in a way I’ve not ever heard before.
