Former bassist of Weezer, Mikey Welsh, has more recently reinvented himself as a successful artist. Welsh attacks his canvases with pure spontaneity and aggression, almost never using a brush and preferring to work only with his hands and fingers.
Minutemen / Search
Clocking in at 51 seconds, The Minutemen lay down all the goods that made them one of the best bands in history. This track features throbbing, melodic bass from Mike Watt, glass-breaking guitar from D. Boon, and tom-tom heavy swirls from George Hurley. Watt takes the mic for this one, at times sounding a bit like David Byrne. Almost as soon as you get your head around this tune, it’s done.
Melvins / Night Goat
Pure evil, witch torturing screams, fuzzed-out death bass. What’s not to love? This is an ideal song for small children.
Syd Barrett / Terrapin
Syd seems to be strumming through a vat of molasses. His creepy ghost vocal performance overshadows the fact that this is indeed a love song.
The Beatles / Dig a Pony
I know, The Beatles are an obvious choice for anyone’s Playlist. I just couldn’t help myself.
Jimi Hendrix / Crosstown Traffic
There’s a kazoo in there. What more could you ask for?
Queens of the Stone Age / Walkin’ on the Sidewalks
The Desert Princes of ‘Robot Rock’. This is my favorite track on their first album, when Nick was still in the band. It has volcanic guitar, and weird, stuttering riffage throughout. And a voice like butter. It’s the perfect song to chain smoke to.
Led Zeppelin / In My Time of Dying
Bluesy, Crowley-esque slide guitar dominates this track from one of my all-time favorites. Incredibly insane drumming starts up in the middle and propels the song to its climax. It’s Zeppelin at the height of their powers.
Minutemen / It’s Expected I’m Gone
This one is off Double Nickels on the Dime, their double album masterpiece. Slow, funky drumming and herky-jerky pop bass lay the groundwork for D. Boons’ choppy guitar. It’s tough to pick a favorite from these guys because they had so many songs. So I’ll just relax and let this one go.
