Formed in Leeds in 2004, The Plight’s first practice was in the particularly rock and roll location of an abandoned office block on the outskirts of the city. The Plight began to tour the UK extensively, playing anywhere that would have them, their hard work paying off in 2006, when Leeds label Thirty Days of Night picked released their self titled MCD that summer. Since then, they have shared stages with the likes of Sick of it All, Bring me the Horizon, and a full UK tour with Gallows.
The Clash / Spanish Bombs
I wore out a tape of London Calling in my art class at school. My art teacher was an old punk and had watched the video of London Calling on the side of the river. He was cool, and used to let me put The Clash on everyday. I saw Evil Dead II for the first time in his office one afternoon.
Dharma Bums / On The Run
I got this on a tribute CD for The Wipers that was organised by Dave Grohl and Kurt Cobain around the Incesticide sessions. So it’s a cover, but they do it with an accordion and it’s really old sounding and warm. It’s on 14 songs for Greg Sage & The Wipers on Tim Kerr Records. Sonic Youth, Hole and Nirvana are on it, too.
Wildhearts / Inglorious
It’s eight minutes long and there’s a whole albums worth of riffs in this song, seriously. They are the first proper band I ever went to see at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall and my dad picked us up outside and he said the windows were beating in and out with the noise. My best friend got tinnitus from that gig and he’s still not recovered, and that was thirteen years ago.
The Pogues / The Sick Bed Of Aul Cúchulainn
It’s punk rock, but folk. Everybody should listen to the Rum Sodomy & The Lash album, immediately. Shane MacGowan is such an amazing lyric writer.
Tragedy / Not Fucking Fodder
Awesome super fast heavy doomy, thrashy hardcore punk. This is from the self-titled debut LP and it kicks.
The Getup & Goers / Going To A Show
Really cool, now split up Swedish rock n’ roll hardcore band. Kinda like Gorilla Biscuits but with more swing. Really good tunes.
Converge / The Saddest Day
I got to watch Converge from the side of the stage for five nights when we played some dates in Europe with them and they stopped playing this song for a while. But they played it in Munich and it was perfect. It’s from Petitioning the Empty Sky, their first LP. I’d seen them live a few times before we played with them, but it was amazing to watch them play so good and so hard every night.
Get Up Kids / Coming Clean
Despite what other people say, 4 Minute Mile was their best record and this is the first song. It’s the best start to a record.
