Dr. Dog is a psychedelic rock group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which formed in 1999 with the release of The Psychedelic Swamp, a concept album realized in the damp ruin of a flooded basement with waterlogged guitars and a digital delay pedal. Although the band has had as many as 20 honorary ‘members’, who have assisted in various capacities through the years, the core of the band consists of five musicians with influences including The Beach Boys, Tom Waits, David Bowie and Neil Young. Their new album, Fate, is a timeless yet contemporary distillation of the band’s open-armed, bighearted sound taken to new heights of creativity.
A. A. Bondy / Vice Rag
Good enough to be a classic old timey melody, except with more contemporary lyrical vices added. Great guitar playing.
Cass McCombs / AIDS in Africa
This was one of those songs I felt like I’d heard before but I hadn’t. That’s how you know it’s good. The melody just keeps pulsing over those mysterious chords. This song can inhabit my head for days on end.
Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band / Big Eyed Beans from Venus
My iPod shuffled to this track the other day. I love Beefheart and it was great to be reminded of how much this song rips.
Thunderclap Newman / Open the Door Homer
A Dylan song. These guys do a great version with their trademark piano breakdown in the middle. I was singing this song over and over to myself trying to find something to eat in Germany and it was delicious.
Faust / Jennifer
Turn the lights down low for this one. Some soft pillows wouldn’t hurt either.
Fleetwood Mac / The Ledge
I’m still getting a feel for Fleetwood Mac; this was definitely a gateway drug. I’m trying to make sure I don’t get too deep.
Van Shipley Trio / Ye shaam ki tanhaian, ayse me tera gham
The next time you’re floating in a tropical lagoon, play this side.
Toni Iordache / Balade Haiduceasca
I could have a better understanding of the technicalities of the cimbalom, but that doesn’t make it any less astonishing to hear this performance. This as about as transcendent as they come.
