winterpark

Melbourne’s Winterpark will play a special Valentine’s Day single launch on Saturday 14 February at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne. Playing tracks from their second album, Falling Men and Flying Dreams, which was released in late 2008 via MGM Distribution, Winterpark returns to the live scene following a successful east coast tour. Mixed by Casey Rice (Dirty Three/Tortoise/Grand Salvo) and mastered by Roger Siebel (!!!/Death Cab for Cutie/Modest Mouse), Falling Men and Flying Dreams takes the listener across contrasting musical landscapes that have been described by critics as ‘vast airy landscapes’, ‘tart, affectionate tunes’, and ’swirling nu-gaze’.

Ulrich Schnauss / Stars
I love this guy’s production and aesthetic. He creates churning layered soundscapes, with soft but driving electronic beats. It’s sort of a bit like My Bloody Valentine meets Pink Floyd in Berlin, which has got to be a good thing.

Maps / So Low, So High
I’ve loved Maps since I first heard them on 3RRR. The band is actually just one guy and his home studio. He makes a cross between the sort of indie music I used to dance to in my youth and the post-rock atmosphere you’d expect from Sigur Ros. Which to me, is a pretty awesome combination.

Midnight Juggernauts / Shadows (M83 remix)
I love remixes where the remix artist takes elements of the original track and creates a whole new thing with them. The original Juggernauts track is great, but M83 takes this track and makes it lush, atmospheric and even more awesome.

Prince / Paisley Park
This track is post Purple-era Prince, and whilst I love the whole Purple Rain soundtrack for its perfect pop song thing, this track is off Around the World in a Day, and it is pop, but also strange and psychedelic, full of crazy guitar sounds and off-kilter synth noises. This is the Richard Swift version of the track.

Wax Stag / Short Road
This is the happiest electronic instrumental song of all time. I found it on the Hot Chip DJ-Kicks compilation, got completely obsessed with it, and couldn’t stop listening to it on repeat. When Winterpark were at Iceland’s Airwaves Festival in 2007, we ended up drinking with Friendly Fires after their show and found out that Wax Stag is actually their bass player Rob’s solo project. The rest of the band thought it strange that I was so into his music.

Foo Fighters / New Way Home
This track was always on high rotation in the mid-late 90s, when I was driving in Tarago’s up and down to Sydney and back with my old band. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of this song. It has the most intense build up at the end of it that still puts shivers up my spine.

Caribou / Melody day
I saw these guys at the Pop Montreal festival, and it was one of the most amazing gigs I’ve ever been to. It was completely inspirational, with their dual drummer action, wall of noise, and psychedelic light show.

The Cars / Drive
The Cars are one band I remember vividly from my childhood. During family holidays driving across the Nullarbor Plain in a 1978 Golf hatchback, we would always listen to the Cars’ Greatest Hits on cassette. And even without the sentimental attachment, Drive is easily one of the best songs ever written.
