The Boston based Boys Like Girls‘ self-titled debut kicks off with the youthful enthusiasm of The Great Escape and closes with the sentimental ballad, Holiday. In between is emotionally-charged rock that isn’t afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve, digs a good pop hook and speaks volumes to anyone who has had their heart bruised. Aw!
Bloc Party / Sunday
I’ve been into this song since A Weekend In The City came out a few years back. Awesome vibe, and great lyrics about sleeping late and waking up hungover. Who can’t identify with that?
Two Tongues / If I Could Make You Do Things
The emotion filled alternating vocals between Max Bemis (Say Anything) and Chris Conley (Saves the Day) are not only undeniable, but give me the chills every listen.
Coldplay / Lovers In Japan-Reign Of Love
This is my favorite song off the newest Coldplay record. Lovers In Japan’s upbeat piano melody is almost euphoric, and is topped off by the delicate vocals of Reign of Love.
The Streets / On the Edge of a Cliff
The new Streets record Everything Is Borrowed showcases Mike Skinner’s contemplative, ‘meaning of life’ ideas. On The Edge of a Cliff tells the tale of a man standing on, well, on the edge of a cliff about to jump. Before he can make the move, an old man who has once been in the same position opens up his eyes to just how amazing it is that humanity has lasted so long that we all are alive at this very moment in time.
Warren Zevon / Keep Me In Your Heart
I first heard this song in an episode of Californication. It was written by Zevon for his final record when he knew that his illness was terminal. Having done some research and learned the story of his life, it brought tears to my eyes.
The Damnwells / Golden Days
This band sound like no other. They are throwback, but modern. This song doesn’t have a huge hook, but the heartfelt lyrics get lodged into your head for days at a time.
Dance Gavin Dance / Antlion
All I can say is BUY THIS RECORD. Most of my iTunes is filled with softer rock and pop music, but the intensity and incredible vocals of Antlion and every other song make it one of the most infectious records in my collection.
