Colorado band A Shoreline Dream take the DYI approach full force, setting up their own label and distribution whilst bridging the gap between post-rock and shoe-gaze with their ambient landscapes, vocals chanting through a radio at the bottom of a well, and one-take room recordings.
Sunny Day Real Estate / Faces in Disguise
Every song brings on a memory and this one is the most vivid. It’s strange, but my brightest visions are brought on by the sea and the sand, and this one takes me back to a day out in the dry heat of the desert when I thought I felt the tickling of some sort of love bug. Jeremy’s voice has never been better, and I can’t imagine production ever sounding more perfect.
Tori Amos / I Can’t See New York
I heard this live before on the recording and it was such a powerful composition. Tori has one of the best voices in music, in my opinion. She can bring any dude to their knees in tears, and that says something. When I heard this, it signified something, and a day later I dumped her.
Skinny Puppy / The Process
This song, in particular, sent me into a deep cavern of electronics. It was my switch from death to industrial. Plus, it was a song I heard down the halls of screams and gore at the haunted house I worked at. It sends me to a different place every time I hear it.
Cynic / I’m But a Wave To
Throughout my schooling days all I would listen to was Cynic. These guys changed the face of death metal forever, and changed my view of it. This song is one of the most intricate pieces of work I’ve heard to date. I still drop my jaw every time I hear it. How they dialed this in so perfectly is beyond me.
Anathema / Balance
Relatively new to my musical vocabulary and it may be premature to put it this high on my list, but this song has and is saving me whenever I think of Michelle. It’s important to have that song that you can relate to no matter what the genre. These guys are powerful composers and it shows right here.
Pink Floyd / Dogs
This album and song in particular was on loop for many years. The guitar and composition is out of control. I’m an album guy, and this is what every album should be modeled after. Deep and reflective in every sense, without even trying to be. It’s a pure, natural sound. These guys can’t be beat.
Concrete Blonde / Mexican Moon
This album reminds me so vividly of the West Coast trips taken with Michelle. Pitch black desert skies and the smell of damp sand. I love Concrete Blonde and will always have that memory attached to this song.
Doves / Sea Song
Another song that reminds me of the late nights on the road, driving to wherever we wanted to. A very dreamy and dark moment in time is captured so perfectly in this track. It sends chills up my spine every time.
