Goodnight, Bull Creek is the third album from Australian singer-songwriter, Bob Evans, and was recorded in Nashville with producer Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Sheryl Crow) who also produced the last Bob Evans’ album, Suburban Songbook. While keeping you in the palm of his hand with his lyrics and melodies, the album does take a sidestep away from the previous albums to show a different side to Evans. ‘This is my rock album. I’m saying goodbye to the suburbs,’ he says.
Goldfrapp / Clowns
This whole album is just superb, but I have particular soft spot for this opening song. It’s so dramatic, with the sweeping strings that build and swell and all the plucked guitar. The melody is so weirdly ethereal but beautiful too. It really has the ability to take you away.
Wilco / Handshake Drugs
I never bought the album this comes from, but I bought this track the other night and love it. I remember hearing it on the radio when it came out and loved it then, too. Jeff Tweedy has an awesome voice and a fantastic way with words and this song is just effortlessly ramshackle and cool.
M.I.A / Paper Planes
This song is genius, really. Creative, inventive, playful and clever. Her first album, Arular, is also fantastic, but I think Paper Planes is my favourite thing she’s done.
Metric / Help, I’m Alive
This song is pretty unconventionally arranged, but so great. It reminds me a lot of The Pixies and cool nineties girl fronted grunge bands like The Breeders and Veruca Salt. But no one sounds like that anymore, so it really sticks out.
Rufus Wainwright / Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk
I’d heard of him for ages, but never investigated until I heard this awesome song. It’s like musical theatre. His voice is exceptional. I think this may be the closest thing to a hit pop song he’s written, but I’m not sure.
The Last Shadow Puppets / Standing Next To Me
I never thought much of Arctic Monkeys, but I love this. The whole album has a real Walker Brothers vibe, but this song is different to all the rest. I love the harmonies and the whole French feel of the production. Super classy.
Empire Of The Sun / Walking On A Dream
This song is everywhere! I love it, though, and the lyrics really get me because it sounds like a song about impending fatherhood, so in that context, the words and imagery are really beautiful.
Goldfrapp / Caravan Girl
Ah screw it, another Goldfrapp song. It’s just such a good album. This is an up tempo rocker, but I really love the chugging piano that runs through it. It’s so uplifting, sunny and feel good. I just can’t get sick of it and the production is amazing.
