beast

The dynamic duo behind Beast met in Montreal, but both are from France. Their sound inhabits a place where the cinematic grandeur of Portishead meets the immediacy of Rage Against the Machine. With help from lyricist Simon Wilcox, Betty strikes a balance between telling vividly detailed stories and still adhering to the concise songwriting structure of pop. Soul, rap, electro, rock and jazz (complete with a Charles Mingus bass sample on “Satan”) collide in Beast.

Amon Tobin / Verbal Feat. Mc Decimal R
Amon Tobin is a great electronic music producer, and this song is dark with a hint of humour. It’s smart and big.

One Day As a Lion / One Day As a Lion
Zack de la Rocha’s new project is this collaboration with Jon Theodore, the very good drummer behind Mars Volta. A new flavor for any RATM lover.

Sigur Rós / Glósóli
Incredible build-up, very uplifting.

Goldfrapp / Human
One of my favorite songs for its arrangements. John Barry would be proud of what he inspired.

M.I.A. / Bingo
M.I.A’s first record was very fresh at the time and still is.

Portishead / Machine Gun
Very efficient with just a few ingredients. They could win a war with this little Machine Gun.

Ennio Morricone / Come Una Sentenza
The imagery of Ennio’s music is so clear that you can see the movie without the frame.
