Pilot Speed, a Canadian four-piece, will be releasing their album Wooden Bones on April 28th. Lead vocalist Todd Clark describes their album as ‘art songs with hooks’.
Spoon / My Mathematical Mind
These guys have a rare ability to be ultra simple yet always memorable and interesting. The first time I saw them live I kinda thought, ‘every song is three chords, and it’s blowing my mind. What the hell have I been doing all this time?’ It doesn’t hurt that the production is always really tasty, too. I definitely like that they’re getting more hi-fi sounding over the years. The guitar work on this track is amazing as well.
Tom Waits / Just the Right Bullets
A great example of my fascination with the creepy side of Tom Waits’s writing. No song is delivered without Wait’s creating a stimulating visual in the mind of the listener. And another great example of creating rhythm via unconventional means. This is one of Tom Wait’s great talents; delivering the familiar in an incredible unique and interesting way: ‘You must be careful in the forest, broken glass and rusty nails;
If you’re to bring back something for us, I have bullets for sale.’
Daniel Lanois / Lovechild
A standout track for me from a very interesting album. When you listen to this album, you can really hear how Daniel influenced the sound and spirit of many of the artists’ albums he worked on. Whether it be U2, Robbie Robertson, or Peter Gabriel records, Daniel’s touch is very evident. There are some really great moments on this record, especially this track, which features some sublime piano playing and some beautiful Pedal Steel.
Grinderman / No Pussy Blues
When the wah-feedback solo happens right after Nick Cave yells ‘Damn!’, it’s like a slap in the face. Pure frustration. This whole record is pretty great, actually. It balances out the prettiness of the recent Bad Seeds stuff; although he’ll usually still throw a filthy word or phrase in there just to remind you he is actually the devil. They also have a song called Grinderman by Grinderman, from the album Grinderman. Not enough people are doing that anymore.
Elbow / Great Expectations
It’s songs like these that really open my eyes and make crystal why I love music: to try to accomplish the impossible task of bringing to life a moment, whether happy or sad, within a song that would make you weep with joy upon hearing.
Radiohead / 15 Steps
As soon as I purchased my copy of In Rainbows, this instantly became my all-time favorite Radiohead song. I wish there was more to say. Sadly there isn’t. The song is bloody awesome. Now love it!
MGMT / The Handshake
I can’t say I know much about MGMT except that they seem to be hugely popular right now. I heard their single, Time To Pretend, for the first time last summer but didn’t get the album, Oracular Spectacular, until recently. Beyond the catchy keyboard-rock singles, there are some real gems. My favourite is this track, The Handshake.
The Flaming Lips / The Gash
My love for The Flaming Lips was renewed recently when I watched a live DVD of theirs at a friends place. I was lucky enough to see them play in Vancouver a couple years ago. The show was amazing. For this song, Wayne Coyne didn’t sing but instead played the gong the whole time! Maybe some day I’ll get a gong for Todd.
