Sky Larkin formed in Leeds, Yorkshire, and have a sound that echoes the likes of The Breeders, Violent Femmes, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their debut album, The Golden Spike, was released in February 2009.
Aphex Twin / 4
This song sums up the year that I spent living with three really good friends and playing a lot of music, listening to a lot of music, arguing a lot, getting mugged, and having mini parties in the basement.

Refused / Worms of the Senses
Controversial I know. A lot of people dislike Refused, but they’re great, that’s all there is to it. I don’t even know when I first heard this song, but this whole album blew my 17 or 18 year-old mind. Having been listening to a heady mix of pop punk, hip-hop and electronica, this was something completely different. A bit sad, really.
Osker / Panic
Anything off Punk-O-Rama 5, really. But this was a stand-out song that led my brother and I to name one of our six family cats Osker (spelled THAT way). I was forced to ‘discover’ pop punk by the first band I was in (we were called Sick Fashion, fact fans) and these compilations were a godsend. I think this was the only one in our local record shop, so I listened to it endlessly and tried to work out the bass lines. It’s only in the last six months that I’ve been taught that it’s okay to like pop punk by Neil Turner and half of Lovvers, following a night where a barman happened to have this CD and was made to play it in its entirety.
Caetano Veloso / Alfomega
The perfect bassline. And it just sounds like the perfect party.
Marnie Stern / The Crippled Jazzer
I’ve missed all of her UK shows because we’ve been on tour at the same times. This sounds equal parts hope: infused and apocalyptic, like the world is ending, but that it’s okay.
Napoleon IIIrd / Hit Schmooze For Me
A local hero of ours, his sounds and words are close to my heart. A real original and a gem of a bloke.
The Mae Shi / You Can’t Do That To An Axe
I saw The Mae Shi at a CMJ all-dayer in New York and they blew my mind so much that for a while I didn’t feel like any of their CDs would do the live sound justice. But then, I recently realised that this was nonsense and I should go on a Mae Shi bender to make up for lost time. Oh, yes.
The Bronx / Pleasure Seekers
I got into The Bronx quite recently. I’ve had the first CD for a while, but must have forgotten it under a pile of other CDs (silly me). I was just beginning to get tired of listening to it over and over again when the third album came out. Hooray! The albums are different, but they compliment each other very well. The first is a venomous, one-track-minded punk rock album, whereas the third seems considered and may even contain hints of, dare I say it, pop.
Zach Hill / Necromancer
I’m probably going to get told off for this because its a 33-minute-long experimental drums and piano collaboration. Yeah, 33 minutes. But, my God, what drums they are. I don’t know whether it makes me want to drum even harder or just give up completely.
