Parisian, Jonathan Morali, aka Syd Matters, came from nowhere to make a big impression with his first two albums. Since the beginning, what has been so astonishing is the artistry of his songwriting, his airy, dream-like style, and his unique production touch, which is instantly recognizable.
Animal Collective / Banshee Beat
Animal Collective is a band that brings freshness to music. They explore and explode the traditional forms to propose a very singular music. My girlfriend told me that this track reminds her of the female orgasm. When I listen to this song, I think that it must be so cool being a girl.
Todd Rundgren / Zen Archer
Todd Rundgren is one of the forgotten geniuses of pop history. We speak all the time about Brian Wilson or the Beatles, but Rundgren released an incredible album by himself at home, from which this track is extracted. The sax solo at the end can seem to be a little kitsch, but with the choirs, it sounds completely amazing.
The Beatles / Penny Lane
The Beatles are, of course, the reference. They have invented so many things. Penny Lane is the ultimate song for me. Everything is perfect on this track.
The Good, The Bad And The Queen / A Soldier’s Tale
This album impressed me. The songs are incredible, and I would die for these Danger Mouse productions. The encounter between this dub bass and pop songwriting is staggering.
Otis Redding / A Change Is Gonna Come
Simply the best soul singer. We’ve just recorded a cover of My Girl by The Temptations, as he has done in the past.
Midlake / Bandits
Although they are almost unknown in France, I like this band for the same reasons as I like Grandaddy or Mercury Rev: great vocal harmonies and indie lo-fi folk music. I attended one of their gigs in France and they literally blew me away.
Devendra Banhart / My Dearest Friend
it’s a short one, but you’ll find almost everything in this song. I particularly like the way he sings on this tune, it seems quite simple but so beautiful. The melody reminds me of a lullaby my parents used to sing to me.
Laurie Anderson / O Superman
An old one, a minimalist, arty song that I used to listen to when I was young. I really think Laurie Anderson is a one of the most visionary artists from the eighties.
