royal plant treatment

Royal Treatment Plant have been attracting a lot of attention in the UK and Europe. Their album was recorded with Ted Miller (Placebo, Blur), and Mike Chapman (Blondie) mixed a few tracks. Hope Is Not Enough was the feature album of Steve Lamacq show on BBC 6 Music’s program. Hope Is Not Enough was also nominated for Debut Album of the Year by influential UK indie station XFM, alongside Lightspeed Champion and The Ting Tings.

Little Death / Baby Can You Dig Your Man
Another of my favorite London bands at the moment, made up mostly of Americanadians with what seems to be an ever-changing drummer and a sexist job description for bass player: must be pretty faced gal or you don’t get the job. I love this band; I love their name; I love their latest self-released EP and I love this song. It’s raw, it’s shouty and LOUD.

TV On The Radio / Stork & Owl
The beauty of this song to me is the opening rhythm and then how the backing vocals interact with the main vocal against the beat – it’s almost misplaced and gives it a slight jerky groove that I love. It pulled me out of my daydream the first time I heard it on the train on the way home from work. Plus, what a sexy mother fucker voice in the chorus. And I dig the pizzicato strings. It makes me want to dance and go all like creative, man.

Laura Veirs / Spelunking
The tune starts and I’m already blinking fast. It’s one of those tunes, with beautiful chord progression. It’s the most gorgeous song, and every time I hear it, no matter where I am, I’m suddenly like ‘waaahhhhhh’ and bawling my eyes out. That’s what it’s all about.

Lungfish / Hear the Children Sing
You want to hear the most awesome riff in the world? And hear it repeated over and over until you can never leave it and it won’t ever leave you? This track is for you. I saw Lungfish in London a while back and almost felt like I was hallucinating. I swear I saw molten nails coming out of the lead singer’s mouth. I freaked myself out.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs / Cheated Hearts
I think I am totally in love with Karen O. I am so in love with her my boyfriend is upset. She has that quality of tough mother fucker with a terrible smile. It’s underlined with a depth of experience and loss that goes right to the core. Just like this song.

The DeBretts / Is It Me
The Debretts are one of my favorite London bands. Is it Me is such an amazing track, it’s the groove and the lyrics: Vonnie Debrett roams the stage and stares you out. And you go home singing, ‘Is it me or is it you? Is it something that I do?’. It’ll be stuck in your head for days.

Mexico City / RU Spiritual
I am totally biased about this band. They are based in Brisbane and I love Ben Carstens, the drummer (I know, I know, you’re getting married. Its ok, I’ve built a bridge and gotten over it). Ben taught me guitar when we met in London and he was the first drummer I every played with (so to speak). Anyway, my favorite Mexico city track at the moment is RU Spiritual.

American Analogue Set / Punk as Fuck
I saw American Analogue Set in London a couple of years ago. They are sublime. I could never imagine them raising their voices or behaving badly. I think they are no longer together now, but they are a beautiful honey-warm band that I love. This track is beautiful and I love the brushes on the drums and the vibraphone ‘tings’ that go with the ride cymbal. It’s like the antithesis of those noisy shouty punky types who are not rock n’ roll but like to play the game, wear the clothes, and think they are the shit. Stop it. Stop it now.
