Post Honeymoon strips bare and slows down the pop songs Nick and Rachel perfected while playing in other outfits. Think Siouxsie Sioux meets The Motels, meets Love & Rockets (without the guitars). The duo’s new album self-titled album was engineered and produced by Greg Norman who has previously worked with Pelican, Russian Circles, Mclusky, The Atari Star, Pinebender, Milemarker, Andrew Bird, and 90 Day Men.
Future of the Left / Manchasm
Colin is a pussy, a very pretty pussy. Colin is a pussy, a very pretty pussycat. Schoolyard chants meet synths and asskicking with tongue firmly planted in cheek. We love this band.
Grinderman / Depth Charge Ethel
This song makes you wanna do it.
Aspic Tines / Music of the Spheres
It is impossible to listen to this album without laughing your ass off, dancing like a moron, and singing all the words. Klaus Nomi eat your heart out.
Eddie Bo / From This Day On
The first song we danced to at our wedding. We first heard it on a Shangri-la Records New Orleans Soul Katrina Benefit compilation and it was really the gateway for us into a ton of fantastic, under-appreciated music from down there like Slim Harpo, The Meters, and Professor Longhair, among others. Sadly, he passed away this March.
Nina Nastasia & Jim White / Odd Said the Doe
We saw them live right around the early stages of the band and were blown away by their command. I love how the song starts as this straight, pretty folky number and Jim completely deconstructs it into a chaotic mess. We left that show saying, “OK really, let’s do this band for real now.”
The Oh Sees / Block of Ice
A Saturday morning regular: super catchy and just a little bit off. The Intelligence’s version of the same song gets a close second, but both records are in high rotation here. I love the feel of both records – they feel like companions to each other.
White Stripes / Conquest
A perfectly awesome song that should be completely ruined by a rock band covering it but it works out amazing. It’s fun to pantomime the action in the song like you’re in a cartoon – and the dueling solos slay. You can really hear them having fun with it.
Rhianna / Umbrella
This is just a great pop song, but it’s got that tinge of longing and vulnerability in it that separates it from your standard pop fare. It makes you wistful, but makes you want to dance and sing along. Tell me you don’t love this song.
