After touring almost non-stop for five years, Japanese band Mono hibernated for over a year to focus solely on writing Hymn To The Immortal Wind. The result is their most eclectic album to date. The instrumentation incorporates strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tympani into their standard face-melting set-up. Recorded to analog tape with long-time producer Steve Albini, there is an intimacy captured here that is at once beautiful and a little terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs as the orchestra rocks in their seats, puckered lips rolling along flutes, and even the conductor’s opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet opening moments.
Ennio Morricone / La Leggenda Del Pianista Sull’Oceano
It’s very epic and romantic, one of the best traditional soundtracks for a love theme. I am always imagining what kind of scene would go perfectly with this song.
Arvo Pärt / Spiegel im Spiegel
This is one of my favorite classical songs of all time. I listen to this song when I cannot sleep because it always calms me down. It is a very peaceful and soothing lullaby.
Beethoven / Piano Sonata NO, 8-02 Pathetique
I chose this song even though I love all of his songs. Some of his music is so intense and chaotic, but this one really shows the gentler side of his mind. It is another peaceful piece that I listen to when I want to clear my mind.
Gorecki / Symphonie Nr3
I believe this song was written for peace. It is a dark and sad melody, but somehow it still expresses hope.
Led Zeppelin / The Rain Song
This song was my first experience of cinematic rock. I listened to Led Zeppelin more when I was younger, but this song still plays in the back of my head. The ending is unbelievably epic and beautiful.
Gavin Bryars / Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet
Gavin Bryars and Tom Waits. I think this is one of the most important and perfect collaborations in music.
Neurosis / The Doorway
I’ve been a fan of Neurosis for a while. I chose this one because it is one of my favorite songs by them. The composition, the sounds, the energy of the band: everything is amazing.
Henry Mancini / Love Theme From Sunflower
This song is a really famous, old, melancholy soundtrack for a very sad movie. But somehow I am always feeling something uplifting and hopeful in it.
