Terra Naomi is a singer-songwriter from upstate New York who gained international recognition through YouTube. She was the first artist to do a music video comprised of fan-generated video clips (it won a YouTube award in 2006) and was invited by Al Gore to play Live Earth in London after he heard her song, Say It’s Possible. She signed a deal with Island UK, released a record, and toured the UK and Europe extensively. After leaving Island and coming back to the States, she is getting ready to release a new studio album that was funded by fan contributions and the sales of an old 2002 record re-release.
Why / Gemini (The Birthday Song)
This song is like its own complex little universe. It starts somewhere and then goes somewhere else and then ends somewhere totally different. Listening to this song while driving has been shown to cause intense euphoria.
Linda Ronstadt / Different Drum
This is a perfect song. It’s a song with lyrics that would typically be sung by a man, which makes it even cooler. Totally straightforward and honest and unapologetic. She just sings the song, if that makes any sense, whereas so many singers over-sing, and in doing so, ruin the impact of the song. Just sing it! Thank you.
Sam Cooke / Touch the Hem of His Garment
Sam Cooke’s voice is absolute perfection. I believe every word he sings and I feel like he’s standing right in front of me when I listen to his songs.
The Second Band / Wild is the Wind
An amazing Swedish band. I love the production. The handclaps and the piano line immediately draw me in. And his voice is so cool. It has some of the whininess that I love about singers like Connor Oberst, but it’s more poppy and has such a sweetness to it. I love it. Heartbreaking lyrics and upbeat and happy music equals stuff I’m a sucker for.
Ida Maria / Queen of the World
I got into Ida Maria’s music when I was living in London and it looks like the band is starting to get some attention in the US now because the guy leading my exercise class at the gym played it the other day, and that’s a sure sign of commercial success. This is an amazing pop song – catchy as hell – and it truly captures the feeling of youth and fun and being young forever, which makes it a little bit sad at the same time.
Ryan Adams / I Taught Myself How to Grow Old
One of the most heartbreaking songs ever. It’s his delivery, the lyrics, the production, the melodies. I love songs that make me cry. It’s a relatively new song that sounds like a timeless classic.
M. Craft / Sweets
The video for this song is one of my favorites ever. I tried to get Kinga Burza to direct a video for me, but she was too busy with Kate Nash or something. Oh well. M. Craft is awesome and I really wish he hadn’t released only one album and then decided not to release any more.
Jonas Myrin / Sunshine
This song has not yet been released, so I listen to the demo all the time. My friend Jonas is amazing. This song is as catchy as hell and it moves through several different styles and is just brilliant. And the production sounds unmistakably Swedish, which I love. Look for Jonas’ music soon.
