Liverpool band The Hot Melts play loud raucous rock and roll. Their next single, Red Lips, will be out soon.
Eagles Of Death Metal / Wannabe In L.A
Since we went on tour with these guys, I’ve been cranking their new album Heart On on my iPod and this has to be the grooviest track they’ve done so far. It oozes rock and roll like only Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes can.
The Eels / Novocaine for the Soul
This is a track from the Beautiful Freak album, which aside from having incredible artwork, is full of amazing songs. Mr.E from The Eels is a living musical legend and his autobiography is currently doing the rounds in our band: an inspiring tale of heartbreak and depression turned into mind-blowing music. Sit up and respect!
Ben Folds / The Ascent of Stan
From the Bend Folds solo album, Rockin’ the Suburbs. This track has some absolutely incredible piano playing and a total master class in harmonies. If you haven’t heard the William Shatner album produced by Ben Folds, you should check it out. It’s very, very good. Yes, we’re being serious.
The Chiffons / My Boyfriends Back
This is an amazing version of this song performed by the all girl group The Chiffons. The main difference is a seriously badass bass line that just drives the whole song in a totally new direction.
Jeffrey Lewis and The Junkyard / Roll Bus Roll
Jeffrey Lewis has been writing beautiful low-fi songs for years and I think this is his masterpiece, an awesome travelling song with a great groove and lots of heart. I think he played Liverpool recently but we were recording in the studio so we didn’t get to go. I seriously regret it.
Marmaduke Duke / Rubber Lover
We’ve been big Biffy fans for a long time and I got quite into the first Marmaduke Duke album, but I was really surprised by the production of their new single and the poppiness of the songwriting. Neither of these are a bad thing and this track is pushing all the right buttons for The Hot Melts at the moment.
The Beatsteaks / Hand In Hand
We were given The Beatsteaks album by some of the guys at our record label, Epitaph Europe’s HQ in Amsterdam, when we were over there for the London Calling festival and we had this track on repeat all the way back to England in the van. A hefty riff and an immense guitar solo, these guys will blow you away.
T.Rex / 20th Century Boy
We love our guitar music, and this riff is what rock n’ roll is all about. Simple, effective, and sounds even better played incredibly loud. Marc Bolan and the boys have an incredible back catalogue, and I heard this recently at a friend’s house and it reminded me how awesome they are. ‘Friends say it’s fine, my friends say it’s good, everybody says it’s just like rock’n'roll’. Hell yes.
