Possessing a commanding voice, a distinctive melodic sensibility and an uncanny knack for nailing complex emotions in song, Amy Speace makes music that’s effortlessly accessible. Her forthcoming release, The Killer In Me, follows her 2006 breakthrough Songs for Bright Street. While Songs won her a loyal international fan base, The Killer In Me finds the New York-based artist forging into deeper, darker lyrical and musical terrain, delivering an album of intimacy and resonance.
The Beatles / The Long and Winding Road
Hands down, my favorite Paul McCartney song. Also, a great great song that even though it has been totally overplayed in my youth, still just stands up. I could hear this song a thousand times (and have) and never get tired of it.
George Harrison / Isn’t It A Pity
All Things Must Pass is one of my favorite albums of all time and this song is very simple but totally affecting, especially when the strings come in with the guitars and everything sounds a bit like it’s under water. It’s one of my favorite sounding albums. And it just breaks my heart. I think my favorite songs are ones that break my heart, make me weep, and then at the end, give me my heart back.
Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach / God Give Me Strength
I first heard this song in the movie, Grace of My Heart, and I had to go find the album. I love how ambitious the melody is. I love the Bacharach strings. And the phrasing, the rhythm of the build, and how it leaps to the chorus. It’s just a really theatrical song, high passion, yet still a pop song.
The Kinks / Better Things
I love the melody of this song. Its one of my favorite love songs.
Patty Griffin / Moon Song
I’m a huge Patty Griffin fan. Her voice and her music hit some really deep part of me. She’s got a longing inherent in her voice. It tears me apart. And her songs always inspire me to write.
The Faces / Ooh La La
A simple song that makes me wanna dance like a hippie girl at a Dead show, spinning in circles a bit tipsy in the summer.
Ray LaMontagne / Winter Birds
I bought this album while I was touring in southern Utah and this song came on while I was driving through a Zion and I had to go back over and over this song. It just stopped me and I think I listened to nothing but this song for three days.
Kate Rusby / The Lark
I’m a huge Sandy Denny fan and I almost chose Who Knows Where The Time Goes, but I just got turned onto Kate Rusby and Kate’s voice affects me similarly to Sandy’s. It just breaks my heart. And this is such a simple song, but ‘Is it wrong to wish you still needed me’, is a great line and is exactly how I’m feeling now. Her voice cuts right through my soul.
