Australian singer Lisa Mitchell first came to attention after finishing sixth on the reality television show Australian Idol 2006. Since then she’s forged a career on her own, opening for Jason Mraz in Melbourne during April and recording her debut album, Wonder, due for release in July.

Little Joy / The Next Time Around
I bought the cheeky promo version of the album for three quid from a record store in Soho last week and fell in love with it. I love the Strokes, so I guess that’s how I heard about this band (the drummer from the Strokes is in Little Joy). But I just love this song to death, regardless.

Andy Cowen / Finger Talking
Ohhhhh Andy! This is the song I put on repeat when I was little and dragged all the couches back and danced and somersaulted on the big rug in the lounge room. One of my goals in life is to play keys like this jazz-cat. Freakin’ beautiful. Smooth, hot chocolate smooth.

Edith Piaf / La Vie En Rose
When I die, I want to row about on a darling little row boat with a an elderly parrot on my shoulder. There will be a soft white feather boa trailing from my neck to the water and Edith’s voice will be echoing across the lake and I’ll row about, singing along with her. Until then, I’ll just keep listening to this.

Aretha Franklin / Won’t Be Long
Aretha! I love you! And you know my favorite line? Second verse: ‘Baby, here I be’s. By the railroad track’. There she be’s indeed. This calls for Cat Power’s, ‘Aretha, sing one for me’. I’m sad you can’t listen to it right now, too.

Paul Simon / You Can Call Me Al
Paul, you can call me anything you like. This morning I woke up and put on my Bootsy Collins-esque gold star plastic glasses decided it was a Paul Simon dance morning. That was this morning and things are going pretty dandy so far.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo / Kuzolatshelelwa
I had a dream about them last night! It was all The Lion King and Ladysmith mashed up into the soundtrack of my dream. It was a good dream, I think. Oh, I can’t remember! I liked it though. Sorry, that’s not very interesting. I love Ladysmith. They’re so friendly and happy and funny. It makes me happy.

Florence And the Machine / Dog Days
Oh! Florence! She sends my heart a-flutter and makes me smile and miss the garden. I wish I lived in the land that the video for this is filmed.

Bat For Lashes / Daniel
Natasha Kahn is incredible. I don’t know her so, yes, it’s odd to call someone incredible. Dancing to Daniel with your eyes closed is chilling and spiritually cleansing. Oh dear, listen to me. What a hippie. It’s beautiful, that’s all I can say.
