The newly released self-titled debut from Britain’s newest songbird, Polly Scattergood, is reaping praise for her delicious brand of indie pop that glides seamlessly between the defiant, the confessional, and the anthemic.

Bonnie Prince Billy / I See a Darkness
This song breaks my heart. I find the darkness of his words very comforting. I love the way he tells a story in his songs — though they are sometimes uncomfortably honest. It’s like reading some beautiful poet’s diary.

David Bowie / Starman
Everything about Bowie is just cool. I love the sound of guitar. I love his odd pop. I love the line: ‘that weren’t no DJ, that was Hazy cosmic jive!’

Radiohead / Fake Plastic Trees
I could, and have, listened to this song on repeat all day. I love the lyrics. It is a beautifully written, incredibly produced song. Thom Yorke has this fragility in his voice that draws me in.

Portishead / Roads
Makes me think of long walks home after hazy nights out. Many happy times have been spent whiling away the hours listening to this song.

Vampire Weekend / The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance
I love the whole Vampire Weekend album. All the songs are so catchy, and they have stuff to say. I like the way the parts on this song have a childlike quality to them. I especially love the beautiful string arrangement.

The Flaming Lips / Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1
This song is a work of art. The lyrics make me smile, and the production is stunning. It is like the whole song is shimmering. There are so many textures and layers you could get lost in it.

Mylo / Need You Tonight
I listen to this whilst running, and it always makes me go faster. It’s got such a great beat, it makes me want to dance all night.

Joy Division / Love Will Tear Us Apart
It’s such a tune. One thing in particular I love about this song is the contrast between the upbeat melody and the sadness of the lyrics.

I don’t know if I’m commenting to the web site or to Polly Scatergood. So I’m just going to assume it’s to the artist.
Polly.
Such an interesting taste in music (though a pity that this site doesn’t have the ability to play Mylo or Flaming Lips, so I may never know what you are on about), certainly gives an insight in to the influences behind your music.
Bowie great, Radiohead not so much. Might choose to get in to Vampire weekend. May I sujest (as you are in to Joy Division) that you check out a band with echoes of Joy Division called the Woe Betides. They have a page on myspace and and EP on itunes.

Gawd that is boring. Almost as if someone who doesn’t care about music made it up for her

I saw Polly live in Leeds a month or so back now. I have to say that there are a few choices that surprised me. Vampire Weekend for example, though I thought their first record excellent too (and indeed their performances when I’ve seen them). I was around when Starman first was released and that particular time is special as Bowie released an inspiration inside in terms of what music could do in terms of moving you, and your viewpoint for the better. Much in the way that Polly’s album did when I first heard it. I am glad that there is Joy Division are there. Again I was around when they were first born and had the privilege to see them play. Again, it was one of those life changing moments you have. Of course any list here is subjective and that is the joy of music is it not?
