Reed KD spent the majority of 2007 and 2008 living out of VW Vanagon, traveling the country and writing the new album. He recorded his new album, In Case The Comet Comes, in his Northern California bedroom with a couple of good mics, a laptop, and some friends. NPR recently compared him to Paul Simon and Elliott Smith.
Bill Monroe and Doc Watson / What Does the Deep Sea Say
While bluegrass harmonies aren’t always my favorite, I love this duet. What can you really say about Bill Monroe and Doc Watson? They’re amazing.
Drew and the Medicinal Pen / A City Was Born
Drew has a raw punk-folk influenced style with great melodic sense and smart lyrics. I could go on and on about him. He releases his music himself and does a fantastic job. I’m really looking forward to the album he’s working on right now.
Steve Hefter and Friends of Friends / Ludicrous Bubblegum Flavors
Steve is someone I met and played a couple shows with last summer. His lyrics are superb: dry wit, beautiful imagery, and a sincerity that stings. His first EP is outstanding from start to finish.
Traveling Wilburys / Poor House
This track kicks off almost every road trip I’ve ever taken. If you haven’t listened to this one yet, pack a bag, pick a road and crank up the volume. I go back to this album all the time.
The Avett Brothers / Weight of Lies
I like the Avett brothers for a number of reasons, but foremost for their live show. They have an immense amount of passion and conviction. This song always inspires a state of nostalgia for me.
Johanna Lefever / Paperback and Lonely
Johanna and I met in Santa Cruz a couple years ago and clicked right away. She has spent a lot of time bouncing around, living out of her truck, and writing music, so it’s no surprise I love her lyrics. Her voice is outstanding as well. Right now she just has a bunch of demos up on MySpace, but is set to release her first legit EP soon. Finally some recordings that will do her voice justice!
Chad Van Gaalen / Somewhere I Know There’s Something
Chad Van Gaalen somehow manages to stay under the radar. He’s signed with Sub Pop, so this kind of surprises me. This is another song that cuts through lyrically for me. His imagery and perspective on life are filled with a science fiction element reminiscent of Aldous Huxley or Kurt Vonnegut. Love it.
Lucinda Williams / Ventura (live at the Fillmore)
Lucinda’s performance on this track is so powerful: raw, run over, honest and beautiful. I listen to this one on repeat all the time. Another great track to turn up while driving through nowhere.
