Produced, engineered, and mixed by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla (whose other production credits include The Decemberists and Tegan & Sara), Telekinesis’ debut album, Telekinesis!, is full of big-hearted songs, written quickly and from the gut. Consisting solely of pop genius Michael Benjamin Lerner (drums, guitar & vocals), Telekinesis is 2009’s most prodigous indie-pop newcomer.
Brian Eno / Cindy Tells Me
Really, everything off of Here Come The Warm Jets is pretty incredible, but this song is a personal favorite. I seriously love how the crazy shrill jet sound comes in and how it is so incredibly loud. Like, if you are wearing earphones, it’s physically painful! It’s just amazing, and only Eno can pull it off.
Built To Spill / Car
There’s Nothing Wrong With Love is a dreadfully perfect record. Car is a dreadfully perfect song. It’s just got some of the most lovely lyrics, and most lovely delivery as well. Favorite line: ‘I want to see movies of my dreams’. I LOVE it. So amazing.
Billy Nicholls / Feeling Easy
A friend got me into this Billy Nicholls record called Would You Believe, and it’s some of the coolest, easy, breezy 60s psychedelic pop you’ve ever heard. I think Billy Nicholls played in the Small Faces band, actually. Feeling Easy is a total summer, all the windows down in your 1976 BMW 2002 type of song.
Bjork / Hidden Place
Let’s not even joke. I have a mega huge crush on Bjork, and this song doesn’t help. I think Vespertine is such an incredibly lush and dense record, and this song is really complex and amazing. Bjork manages to totally bridge the gap between electronic blips, and contemporary songwriting. And that’s a hard thing to achieve! Plus, there is a full Inuit choir! Crazy!
ELO / Livin’ Thing
Jeff Lynne, total genius. Livin’ Thing is such a cool song because it’s got the coolest chord progression. It’s also got the coolest Bee Gees-style super high background vocal harmonies. I love this song to death.
France Gall / Baby Pop
I am totally smitten with France Gall. I’ve got this terrible obsession for 60s French pop music, and France Gall is at the height of that obsession. This song is totally amazing: aatchy as all get out, and the production is super cool. I think I love French pop because I can’t speak French, and the melodies are the thing that really stand out. I’m sure the lyrics are mega cheesy.
Joy Division / Disorder
Disorder has one of the coolest bass tracks ever. Joy Divison are one of those bands that you can’t explain the reason you love. It’s like they are going to fall apart at any moment, but they teeter on that edge of destruction in the best possible way. And it makes you feel cool when you listen to it. Unknown Pleasures is an utterly essential record in so many ways.
Pavement / Blue Hawaiian
Stephen Malkmus is brilliant. This is a fact that cannot be disputed. The evidence is on each and every Pavement record, but this song in particular for me showcases the pure brilliance of Malkmus and company. It’s bratty, and it’s fucked up, and it’s perfect, and it’s flawed all at the same time. It’s Pavement hi-fi style, and it’s awesome.
