Based in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood, Loop 2.4.3 has toured throughout North America, Europe, Scandinavia, South Korea, and Australia, and has performed for radio, film, and television, including footage for The Learning Channel and MTV. The group’s debut recording, Batterie, was released in 2007.
Morphine / Candy
This is from the record Cure for Pain, which is an old favourite of mine. The bass line is addictive. The lyrics have this romanticism that ultimately feels tragic in a Nietzchian way. Mark Sandman died just a few years ago, which was a great loss.
Uncle Jimmy’s Dirty Basement / Stop
This is a great band with a multi-media show from New York’s Lower East Side. Most of their material is tongue in cheek and very Zappa-esque, but this one is a serious rocker and statement about when enough is enough.
Eminem / Same Song and Dance
Totally demented but a wicked flow and, of course, very clever lyrics. Em gives a rare laidback delivery over a backing track that captures this melancholy mood in a way that indie rockers dream about.
Gustav Mahler / Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth)
Actually, more of a symphony in scope, so maybe doesn’t belong in this list. Nevertheless, beautiful, beautiful music dealing with life, love, and death.
His Name is Alive / As We Could Ever
From the record, Livonia. This is a soundtrack from a parallel universe that I want to be a part of. They use minimal instrumentation and two female voices to get this stark evocative sound.
Istvan Peter B’Racz / Poe
Based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, MS, found in a bottle, this is a multi-movement piece that is very eerie and evocative of Poe’s writing. I love Poe’s work and Istvan captures the strangeness and wonder of it here.
Jimi Hendrix / Electric Ladyland
This whole album is simply brilliant. It rocks, it’s soulful, it’s never tiresome but always feels inventive, even forty years later.
John Lennon / Mother
When he gets to the primal screaming stuff at the end you just want to cry. God bless you John.
