Dragonette recently released their debut single, Fixin To Thrill, from the album of the same name and it’s already been championed by Radio 1’s Pete Tong on his Essential Selection. This is the kind of music Britney wishes she wrote, internet bloggers hyperbolize over, and people lose their minds over. They do. File next to Robyn and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but turn the lights down real low, and smear on the sleazy sexy vibe.
Grizzly Bear / Two Weeks
I loved this tune when I first heard it. And loved it even more when I saw the video! It sounds like a more haunting Pet Sounds.
Passion Pit / Moths Wings
I really like how epic the choruses are. His melodies are always interesting. Definitely a high rotation record right now.
The Big Pink / Velvet
I don’t know much about these guys, but I really like this track. I love all the chaotic noises in the background as the song progresses. This is one of those songs that is dark and beautiful at the same time: a hard thing to pull off, but it’s really great when it works.
The Whitest Boy Alive / Burning
Very sparse! It’s refreshing to hear such a pared down production these days. Again, I don’t know much about these guys, but this track grabbed my attention. I’m excited to discover more of their music.
Peter Bjorn and John / Just the Past
I always like how these guys use sounds and instrumentation to create a new aesthetic for each song. I don’t know how many bands these days are conscious of that. It seems like most bands find a cool sound, make a track around it, then throw some lyrics on top. Peter Bjorn and John seem to have a lot of synergy between lyric and music.
Fever Ray / When I Grow Up
One of the more striking voices of recent times. I love the spooky digital harmonies she uses on some of the other tracks on this record. A truly original artist.
Phoenix / Girlfriend
I like how big the choruses and bridge sound in this song without hitting you over the head. They’re epic without needing to be overstated. A hard thing to pull off. This record is great from top to bottom. Love it!
Sebastian Tellier / Kilometer
This is what sex would sound like if it were music.
