hafdis huld

Singer-songwriter Hafdis Huld was born in Reykjavik, Iceland and now divides her time between the UK and Iceland. From the age of 15 she sang and toured the world with iconic Icelandic collective Gus Gus. When they weren’t touring, Hafdis took time out to star in several Icelandic films. In between writing and performing, her recordings have been used for several TV ad campaigns and she appeared in a viral video campaign for Reyka Vodka. She is also a featured vocalist on Tricky’s 2008 album Knowle West Boy. She has a new single coming out called Kongulo (Icelandic for ‘spider’) which is about Frenchman Alain Robert, who climbs skyscrapers without any supporting equipment.

Dolly Parton / Jolene
If I had to choose my all-time favorite song, I think it would be this one. It is just one of these songs I wish I had written every time I hear it. I have many memories of singing along with it in the car in Reykjavik with my mum and my sister.

Patience of Angels / Boo Hewerdine
This is a lovely song written by my friend Boo. He released the album Harmonograph in 2006, where he sings songs he had originally written for other people. Patience Of Angels was first recorded by Eddi Readar in 1994.

Sia / Buttons
I really like Sia’s album Some People Have Real Problems. Buttons is a hidden track at the end of the album. I also recommend checking out her homemade music video for the song. It is just brilliant.

Madonna / Material Girl
This one just makes me smile and dance around when I hear it. I made a cover version of it for my live show using a only a banjo acoustic guitar and a glockenspiel and people still dance to it.

Dionne Warwick / I’ll Never Fall in Love Again
This song is overly sweet and probably won’t earn my too many cool points, but it is just so lovely. Burt Bacharach has been one of my favorite songwriters since I was very young. I would love to write a song with him one day.

Kelis / Milkshake
Always gets me onto the dance floor. I don’t know why, it’s not even that easy to dance to. Also, if you have an Icelandic accent, like me, it never hurts to sing this song accompanied by a ukulele early in the morning at a house party.

Kings of Leon / Use Somebody
We are doing a lot of driving to gigs and festivals at the moment and having good music in the car really helps on long drives. This is one of the albums I bought recently. It has many good songs on it and is popular in the car.

Paolo Nutini / Last Request
This song off his first album became one of my favorites after hearing Paolo singing it live when we supported him on a UK tour a couple of years ago. Just beautiful.
