Fresh off a win for Best New Band at the Metal Hammer Golden God awards, heavy rockers Five Finger Death Punch are back with a new album, War Is The Answer (Prospect Park Records), that picks up where their critically acclaimed, hit debut record The Way Of The Fist left off. With a band name inspired by the ultimate death blow in the film Kill Bill, it is safe to say that these guys are brutally redefining contemporary metal.
Demon Hunter / My Heartstrings Come Undone
This song is loaded with melody from start to finish. I find it heavy but soothing. Yes I said soothing! These guys manage to have that great blend of metal and melody. A must listen.
Scar Symmetry / Timewave Zero
This band is incredible and virtually unknown. My band mate Zoltan turned me on to them. The singer has an incredible voice and the guitar player is like Malmsteen on steroids. This particular track has an amazing chorus the kind you can’t get out of your head. It’s extreme progressive Euro metal at it’s finest. I believe the band is from Norway.
Killswitch Engage / End of The Heartache
This is one of those songs that you say to yourself ‘I wish I wrote that’, then subsequently you try to rip it off in hundred different ways, and they all suck. The song is just good from A–Z. I get the same feeling every time I hear it. It’s not up-tempo or anything crazy, but the mood and the sound of the song is just fucking amazing.
Finger Death Punch / Hard To See
This one is brand new and needs no explanation.
Imogen Heap / Hide and Seek
Ok, out of all the songs I’ve listed, if you’ve never heard this before, stop everything you’re doing and go find it. It’s the most amazing: moody a’capella vocal recording you will ever hear, not to mention that the lyrics are heavy.
Killswitch Engage / A Bid Farewell
Not too much more to report here other than I like the face peel with the melodic chorus.
Jason Hook [American Justice] / Svengali
This is not a shameless attempt to plug my own shit, but the truth is, I’m not just always listening to music but I’m always writing and recording it. Svengali is the song that I happen to be mixing right now, so I have been forced to listen to it six hundred times. The song features a spoken guest vocal from Alice Cooper.
Zakk Wylde [Book Of Shadows] / Dead as Yesterday
The thing I liked about this particular record is its honesty. I love all the work Zakk did with Ozzy. But never really cared for BLS. However, surprisingly, this guy can really sing and play folk songs. I think this track is raw Zakk and his acoustic guitar. Touching to say the least.
