With comparisons to Joanna Newsom, Marissa Nadler and Karen Dalton, Californian folk singer Alela Diane is back with her new album To Be Still. Having captured hearts with her glorious debut, The Pirate’s Gospel (named Rough Trade Shop’s number one Album of 2006), Diane is one of the world’s most bewitching new songwriters.
Fairport Convention / Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Sandy Denny is one of my favorite vocalists- such purity and grace in the way she carries a melody. The words of this song are ringing true for the way my days have been passing lately. Too soon gone, not sure what happened.
Michael Hurley / Fat Mama
Michael cooked us dandelion greens out by the mouth of the river one day a few years back. He is a little window to another time. His songs are a breed of mysterious children who wander, and if I could ever catch them, I would give them a home.
Loudon Wainwright III / This Summer
I heard this song for the first time last summer when I was driving down to the river in my Volvo with the windows down. It made me feel amazing, and quickly became my jam during those hot months. It was the anthem for my moments at home, swimming in the emerald waters of Nevada County.
Townes Van Zandt / Dead Flowers
The words of a desperate man are dear to me. Townes sings of his truth. It’s a reckless beauty. It’s the kind of song that makes me want to gather with friends, and pretend that days are simpler.
Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood / Some Velvet Morning
I heard this song in a bar and was taken to another land, sitting there, awestruck, drinking Miller High Life. I think I want to name my daughter Faedra now.
Fleet Foxes / Tiger Mountain Peasant Song
Honestly, it’s been a long time since new music has knocked me down. But driving through the Pacific Northwest listening to the Fleet Foxes for the first time, it happened. There is truth in these songs, the trees along the highways in the north told me so.
Tim Hardin / If I Were A Carpenter
This song actually makes my heart ache. I become physically off balance when I listen. It is an anthem of the heart, and it is what I hope for in every good man.
Fleetwood Mac / Rhiannon
What can I say? This song is a total hit: the guitar riff, Stevie’s voice. Fleetwood Mac makes me want to write hits because there is nothing like a song that crawls inside and won’t leave. This one has burrowed deep down and is camping out at this point.
