Taking the gauntlet laid down by Girl Talk and sharpening it even further, the response to Ethan Ward’s (aka E-603) Torn Up has been remarkable: overnight, three tracks from the record were lodged in the Hype Machine’s top five list. Torn Up contains over 280 samples from the past six decades, and also includes some music composed by Ward himself. Live, Ward masterfully mixes about 500 samples together into one party anthem entirely on the spot.
The Misfits / Hybrid Moments
I listen to this song at least once a day. The song is the perfect length and rocks my fucking brain the whole way. Danzig’s lyrics and voice are nothing but amazing. The first time I heard it, I knew I would never be the same again.
Billy Joel / Sometimes A Fantasy
I am pretty sure every time I wake up, this song is playing in my head. And I can’t explain it. When I was young, every time my family would go on a long trip, we would always listen to Billy Joel. I always liked singing along to this song because Billy does all those rad breathing and stuttering tricks. That’s my favorite way of spicing up lyrics.
Talking Heads / This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)
I rediscovered this song and cannot stop listening to it. For some reason the instrumentation and melody make me feel like a new person. It is literally an intoxicating song.
OMD / If You Leave
If this song was in a movie that I really liked, I would have an excuse to like it as much as I do. Unfortunately, I love it just because its so 80s pop. The synths could not be more spot on. They are made to make me dance like Molly Ringwald.
No Age / Brain Burner
This song has a shit ton of heart. I can’t sing along to it very well because I cannot understand the lyrics but I know exactly what it’s all about. It’s so raw I want to smash dinner plates when I listen to it.
Calvin Harris / The Rain
This song slams harder than Shaq. Once the intro drops and that bass synth comes in, I lose it. The song is very basic, overall, but it’s got some genius songwriting and brilliant production. My hat goes off to Calvin Harris because he has his sound made.
Beck / Milk & Honey
The warmer it is, the more I listen to Midnite Vultures. This song is so well put together, I can’t help but love it. It has the perfect blend of pop and abstract elements. Also, there is so much going on you can never get bored of listening to it.
Neneh Cherry / Buffalo Stance
Every person on earth needs to hear this song. It’s a late 80s classic that makes you shake your ass. The minimal instrumentation is really tight and it has an air of Marky Mark, but less totally played out.
