bloody panda

New York City experimental doom metal band Bloody Panda has just released a new album, entitled Summon, via Profound Lore Records.

Mobb Deep / Allustrious
Mobb Deep are probably the most metal of all rap groups. In fact, this track, which features a creepy church organ sample, has the lyric ‘this is heavy metal for the black people’.

Group Bombino / Imuhar
This is protest music made by nationless Tuareg nomads, banned in many parts of northern Africa. This track in particular captures that loping rhythm of cantering horses, the loneliness of the desert, and the humbling sight of an endless horizon as the sun rises.

Endstille / Alteration of Roots
If you want to understand the sheer terror black metal can induce, this track by German band Enstille is for you. They’re obsessed with WWII imagery, though they claim they are not Nazis.

Odetta / Bald Headed Woman
This is her a cappella version of the song by Shel Talmy, originally popularized by the Kinks. It’s just about the most mournful, affecting recording I’ve ever heard.

Gun / Sunshine
This track by short-lived and obscure 70s rock band Gun has the lyric ‘when you call me, please be cool.’ It’s a great summertime jam full of blazing guitar solos.

Daniel Higgs / Devotional Songs of Daniel Higgs No. 1
Actually, all of the untitled tracks on this album of Higgs’ weird, semi-improvised guitar and banjo spirituals are amazing. He just let a tape player run while he played them, not even pausing when the cassette flipped.

Skepticism / March October
This song is massive, despite its relatively short length for a funeral doom track. It sounds like Tiamat re-unifying the sky and the earth to annihilate humanity.

Tyr / Hold the Heathen Hammer High
This song has the catchiest chorus of any metal song I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately, the only hammer in my house is a rubber mallet, so I look pretty silly when this song comes on.
