With regard to album titles, Rewild is as apt a mission statement as Brooklyn band Amazing Baby could get. Formed out of the remnants of many a Brooklyn band, Rewild is the product of love and sustaining the loss of it, a car crash, a fourteen-piece orchestra, and the desire to make sense of – or escape — their surroundings. “We are fascinated with escapism and creating small worlds that can stand alone or be connected as stories within the context of our album,” says lead singer Will Roan. They are songs of catharsis, anthems of evolution, the marriage of feral emotionality with a deep intellectualism.
Cocteau Twins / Blue Bell Knoll
This song is like Enya covering My Bloody Valentine. Actually, it sounds like that weird singing alien chick known as the Diva in the Fifth Element starring Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman. Sorry, I have a nosebleed and my Boba Fett helmet is upsetting my allergies.
Galaxy 500 / Isn’t It A Pity
This song is the best jam to rock when you’re on a train leaving someone you love and it’s raining outside and the rain is streaking down the window like the tears on your cheeks and then you look down and you realize that gypsies stole your book of CDs and that’s the only one you got.
Prince / Starfish and Coffee
This Sign O’ The Times gem is the perfect song for babies and other children. I put it on a mix for my goddaughter but never sent it. I am sorry. It has a sick but subtle Kraftwerky beat and tells a very un-Princely tale of eccentricity and feminism. A must for any woman child.
The Incredible String Band / The First Girl I Loved
This band, known for singing about Witches Hats and Monkey roommates, have also written one of the top two best love songs of all time. Although seemingly specific, it is an incredibly relatable tale about having to say goodbye to your high school girlfriend. It is also an apology and an explanation song. It is extremely human, beautifully played and my greatest songwriting inspiration.
The Dramatics / In the Rain
This is definitely one of the eeriest psychedelic soul songs of all time. It begins with the sound of thunder and the rhythmic minor seventh skank of early guitar delay. Without this song their would be no RZA. In fact, I think he sampled it.
The Replacements / Alex Chilton
It’s awesome to hear a rock and roll homage jam that is not about Elvis or John Lennon. The four chord riff is power-pop at its fucking best. It’s also awesome for Paul Westerberg to not only acknowledge his greatest influence, but write an awesome song about him” ‘If he died in Memphis that’d be cool’. Totally, dude!
Organized Konfusion / Bring it On
Oh yeah! This is why rap rules. That’s why rap is a talent. Man, I love 90s rap. Its bad ass and slow and only uses snare, hat, kick and the occasional jingle bell. Man! Monch and Po can rap. ‘I eat MCs like cereal that’s
soggy’. Bring it on! Is this Hip-Hop’s ‘Kick Out The Jams?’
The Beach Boys / The Girls on the Beach
Every new Amazing Baby song is gonna sound like this. Ridiculous vocal harmonies and melodies and a chorus that seems like it’s in a different key. ‘Oh, ripping off the Beach Boys … real fucking original.” Whatever, dude. The Beach Boys rule. At least I didn’t write about Damaged Goods.
