deastro

Combining the playfulness of Passion Pit, the dreaminess of School Of Seven Bells, and the electronic abandon of The Postal Service, Deastro is a pop prodigy like no other. With an unhinged imagination that extends throughout every facet of his output, the 22-year-old has recently released his new album Moondagger on Pod Records [Inertia].

Wavves / Cool Jumper
I really liked the last Wavves album and hearing this new stuff really makes me excited to hear what he will do next. I always liked the synth/loop interlude stuff that he would do in between songs and I was stoked to hear it integrated into this track. I like this song because it makes me want to buy a skateboard again it reminds me of this venue called the Wired Frog that I used to go to when I was younger. Kids would freak out strip to their whities and mosh like primitives. I am glad music like this is coming back.

Matrix Metals / Ray Ban Meltdown
I love this track because it reminds me of a lo-fi version of the Muppet Mayhem. Every time I listen to this song, I see Dr. Teeth rocking out the phased synth line while Animal is literally tearing apart his drum kit. I can’t find much out about this band. My friend Dan, who runs a tape label called EXBX tapes, told me about them and I have been playing them like a kid hooked on pixie sticks.

Bibio / Ambivalence Avenue
I really can’t explain this song because it reminds me of a bygone era, a generation that I have only seen on television and in the murky reflections of the grown up children of the 60s and 70s. I have stalked Bibio since Fi came out, but I was blown away by this album. I was so used to his Takoma records experimental guitar jamz, that I almost couldn’t believe this was Bibio. But damn is it good! The whole album is insane, easily my favorite album since the self-titled Women debut. I am stoked that great stuff has been happening for this guy. He deserves it.

Sun Araw/Predator Vision Split LP
I feel like I am in a movie whenever I listen to this album. I put it on while I started typing and I got stuck in it for about 40 minutes. This album should have been the score for Apocalypse Now. You could easily see these guys playing in the middle of a rainforest with an indigenous group of people totally freaking out to their music. You should just check out everything that Not Not Fun puts out.

Dolphins Into the Future / On Seafaring Isolation
Listen to this album, think about Florida, echo the dolphin on Sega Genesis, go to the beach, or sit in your front yard when it is sunny in a lawn chair with headphones on, even if your neighbors or parents think you are weird, and chill out. Think about good stuff like grandmothers, and birthdays. Think about the ever-expanding universe, and Saturday morning cartoons. Turn on the sprinklers, watch each individual drop of water fly through the air. Imagine that it is dancing to the music. Think about blue whales and how they have been here way longer than we have. And Star Trek 4. Think about how ridiculous and chubby William Shatner is in Star Trek 4, and how nice his tan is.

Women / Shaking Hand
This band reminds me of me and my brothers jamming in our basement when I was 14. We were obsessed with overlaying as many guitar parts as possible. We were nowhere near this good, but this band reminds me of my brothers, of what it meant to be the sons of a pastor wrenching out as much noise out of our instruments as we could because we wanted to make something worthwhile. This band is on a different level than so many other bands around today. Everything about them feels real.

Super Minerals / Oxygen Bombs [Part 1]
This song reminds me of John Adams and what the minimalists would probably have done earlier if they had the technology we had today. I love music that always hints of something to come, but never gets there. This song seems to be building towards a universe but instead it comes on like a slow wave of peace at the brink of sunrise. Orange light creeps like slime into my eyes when I listen to this band.
