jer coons

Jer Coons is a pop artist from the green mountains of Vermont. His songs draw comparisons to John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Damien Rice (although, as Jer would claim, you do not need Zoloft to enjoy his music). His debut album Speak drops September 29th through RED Distribution.

Michael Jackson / Baby Be Mine
Talk about soul. What Quincy and Michael did with this track has forever shaped the way I look at pop music. I put this song on, turn it up loud and inevitably end up dancing around like an absolute idiot for its entire duration. It MAKES you move. I’d tell you to pick this album up, too, but I’m pretty sure the world got the memo.

Anaïs Mitchell / Your Fonder Heart
With the best elements of Ani DiFranco, Cyndi Lauper and Frank Sinatrarolled in one, my favorite Vermont singer-songwriter, Anaïs Mitchell, brings it every time. Just try not to let the sparse, sophisticated production of Your Fonder Heart floor you. And even if you’re a musician, good luck coming close to matching her vocal phrasing. It’s just not gonna happen.

Bob Dylan / She Belongs To Me
There’s nothing I can say about Dylan’s songwriting that hasn’t been covered ad-nauseam by every music critic ever. I’ll let his words do the work: ‘She can take the dark out of the night time and paint the day time black’. Perfect.

Hall & Oates / You Make My Dreams Come True
If I could make a Secret Playlist of exclusively Hall & Oates songs, I would. It was incredibly difficult picking my favorite, but I’ll have to go with this three minute and two second jam, for the sole reason that it is literally impossible to be in a bad mood when this song comes on. This track is musical sunshine. Thanks guys!

Sondre Lerche / Tragic Mirror
I have to give props to Sondre for crafting a song on an acoustic guitar with chords so well voiced they sound like they were written by an exquisite pianist. When the bridge drops, you’re transported back in time through four or five eras of Beatles tunes. Stunning.

Barry Manilow / Mandy
This is the most played song of all time on my ipod. Don’t judge.

Chris Thile / Heart in a Cage
‘Well, I don’t feel better when I’m fucking around’, is such a ballsy start to a verse, it knocks me on my ass every time around. What Thile and the How to Grow a Band manage to pull off on this Strokes cover is so mind-blowingly dynamic and tight, you don’t want to believe it was recorded completely live by five guys in front of two mics. Drop everything you’re doing and go get this album now. Go.

Bon Iver / Re: Stacks
I can’t even come close to explaining how much this song means to me. A perfect musical snapshot. Pristine, lyrical imagery that proves the value of being succinct. Beautiful.
