Firekites, from Newcastle, Australia, have a beautiful album, The Bowery, which is earthy, organic and delightfully unrefined. Across the gentle folky acoustic-based songs you can hear the subtle sound of the fingers sliding across the guitar frets, the gently whispered vocals, which hint at secrets and cheeky serenades, and the sense of soulful introspection that tangles itself elegantly amongst its minor chord tapestry.
Whitest Boy Alive / Golden Cage
This song really is a stand out for these guys. Clearly captured instruments knitting sharply together, great lyrics, amazing film clip.
Boards of Canada / An Eagle In Your Mind
This record has been aptly described as God in detail. This track sets the scene: scientific, sinister, frozen in carbonite. Slowly, it thaws out, then drops the smooth groove.
Wilco / Jesus, Etc
A beautifully crafted song in all respects. The lyrics are sublime. I often reference this track as a bit of a comfort listen.
Phoenix / Lisztomania
This is just crafty fun. I can’t say that I’ve ever clearly understood the lyrics to a Phoenix track, which I think is why I love them so much. The way the vocals play off the instruments is really cool. Yep, dance in your bedroom pop.
Pivot / Sweet Memory
This track has really sweet hooks and breakdowns. Lawrence Pike is officially King Kong on the drum kit, just massive but precise.
Radiohead / Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
When this record came out, I was obsessed. In this song, the build up is pretty religious. Then it just dumps you in the ocean.

Seekae / Yurai
I have just come onto this Sydney electro oufit and it damn near blew my hair back with the detail and tones on this track!
Kid Sam / Black Ant
These guys toured with Firekites earlier this year and it was great to meet them and experience them live. I love the lyrics and mood on this one, especially the drums versus pots and pans.
