Os Mutantes were formed in Sao Paolo Brazil in 1966 by Sergio Dias and his brother Arnaldo, who blended their love of English rock n roll, culled from shortwave radio broadcasts, with American psychedelic in the spirit of Jimi Hendrix and traditional Brazilian music to create an entirely new sound to match an equally turbulent time in Brazilian history. The recent release of their latest album, Haih, marks the band’s first recorded material since 1974 and their first album to receive a worldwide release.
Stravinsky / The Firebird
It’s just so beautiful. It’s a study of how to develop a melody and pushes the envelope in all directions. It’s constantly evolving all the way through.
Russell Garcia / Fantastica: Music From Outer Space
Even today in terms of electronic music, it is pioneering. Not only that, but science fiction music, too. Everyone followed what he did and he more or less invented the sound of outer space.
John Mclaughlin / Lotus Feet
The way the melody builds alongside a simple harmony is incredible. It’s a fantastic and beautiful song.
The Beatles / Tomorrow Never Knows
It’s a masterpiece. I still don’t understand how they did that. It’s amazing.
Edgar and Johnny Winter / Tobacco Road
One of the best rock albums ever recorded and my favourite track from it. Rock n’ roll in its perfection.
Yes / Star Trooper
It’s a great tune. Pure sunshine music, it’s so positive and uplifting.
Ray Charles / Ruby
The way that he sings is incredible. Pure poetry to anyone that ever fell in love. It’s such a fantastic song.
Ray Charles / Eleanor Rigby
The way the he interprets it is amazing, one of the only times that an interpreter did a better job than one of the Beatles. It shows so much emotion and pain.
