With a blend of old-school punk, world beat and modern pop influences, Chicago-based AM Taxi combine experience with exuberance on their Virgin Records debut, We Don’t Stand A Chance due out early 2010.
The Sonics / Have Love, Will Travel
Adam: Of all the garage bands forming in the Pacific Northwest around the early to mid-1960s, The Sonics had the most fuel. They were louder and faster, yet they somehow had more soul than their peers. Have Love, Will Travel is ideal for any impromptu three A.M. wake up calls. You’ll be a hit with the neighbors.
Beach Boys / God Only Knows
Adam: In 1966, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys ditched the surfboards and set out to create something groundbreaking. Tony Asher’s honest, and at the time controversial words, combined with the spectacular lead vocal of youngest Wilson brother, Carl, is enough to warm up any of us California dreamin’ Midwesterners.
Luke: Any woman that hears it will suddenly find herself lacking pants and underwear. Who doesn’t love an instrumental break that involves timpani?
The Ramones / Teenage Lobotomy
Adam: Nothing made me wanna skip school, rip up my jeans, and sniff some glue quite like The Ramones. Of course, I don’t go to school anymore, my jeans seem to rip themselves these days, and the glue … wait, what was the question? On their third record, The Ramones were taking their sound a bit further from the raw debut. This is drummer/producer Tommy Ramone’s last record. Play this one loud and hide me from the glue!
Mother Love Bone / Crown of Thorns
John: Ah, the grunge years. Although Mother Love Bone technically wasn’t a grunge band per se, they were the bridge between the best of 80s hair metal and the early ’90s Seattle sound that became synonymous with flannel, Doc Martins, and the movie Singles.
By the time I heard Mother Love Bone, singer and front man extraordinaire Andrew Wood had already died from an overdose of heroin. But he, along with future Pearl Jam members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, exposed me to a world of music that changed my life forever.
Beastie Boys / Car Thief
Adam: Back in ‘89, you could get away with sampling everything, and that’s just what the Dust Brothers did when they produced the acclaimed Paul’s Boutique record for the Beastie Boys. Use headphones for this one.
Dan Auerbach / Whispered Words (Pretty Lies)
Adam: The Black Keys were the coolest thing to come out of Ohio since the Dead Boys. This is singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach’s first solo record and it kills everything else that’s come out lately. He also played and recorded most of this stuff himself.
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals / Let it Ride
Jason: The song title kind of speaks for itself. It’s a great song to listen to while traveling in the midst of the night, the middle of the day, or while stuck in traffic. It has also calmed down a whole group of my friends while in times of drama. Great lyrics, and the band really set the mood in this song.
Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid
Luke: I LOVE THIS SONG. I always will. From the flamingos in the background going ‘whoa-whoa’ to Sebastian the Crab singing smooth jams designed to entice the Prince to kiss the babe (seriously, I would have been making out with her before we even got in the boat, even if her lower half was still a fish), everything about this song is 100 percent AWESOME.
